I need help determining if this is a suitable school list for someone with my statistics and regional ties. I would also like to know if there is anything in my application that is lacking and could be improved ASAP. Another thing I think is important to note is that I completed my degree in 2.5 years, so I am unsure if that has a positive or negative impact on how Admissions Committees perceive this application. I know MCAT is my limiting factor for this cycle, but I really would rather not have to take it again...

  • cGPA: 3.95, sGPA: 3.98
  • Bioengineering Major w/ Chem minor
  • 507 (128/125/127/127) → 510 (129/127/127/127)
  • Ohio resident, undergrad at a local state university in Ohio
  • Asian Male ORM
  • 470 hours of nonclinical employment as a cashier
  • 431 hrs shadowing in Orthopedic Surgery, Anesthesiology, Neonatology
  • 950 hrs research in 3 different Labs (350 hrs, 180, 430 ), 1 Second Author pub and 1 poster pres at a regional conference with/ two more posters on the way
  • 340 hrs leadership across 3 orgs (President of campus org but with decent impact, Secretary of another org where we raised 20k for international medical aid, and Organized for local STEM exposure event for Elementary school kids)
  • 180 hrs volunteer tutor w/ ESL Adults from conflict regions(Helped a student get a scholarship to study abroad and pass standarized english exam)
  • 80 hrs food pantry volunteer (This connects to my volunteer clinical work)
  • 330 hrs Community clinic volunteer (Worked in 3 internships as essentially an MA, was able to help address a gap in care )
  • Hobby is listed as weight lifting, but I talk about rock climbing and designing clothing in my secondaries as my other hobbies.
  • Created a healthtech startup, which I talk about in secondaries, aimed at helping underserved patients
My PS is about how my background in engineering and design taught me to solve problems with empathy, and how that mindset led me to medicine as the best way to help people directly.

Include if you want...

How will you discuss your connection between food pantry work and your startup? Have you worked in or shadowed primary care? Any community service experiences in rural health settings?

The startup is related to the community clinic, not the food pantry work. The community clinic work is in a PCP setting, but I am not sure if that is allowed to be used in the context of the application. My experiences with rural care are limited to the community clinic, but I would say I have less experience with that part of medicine.

You should accumulate another 70 hours at the food pantry since some schools screen at 150 hours for non clinical volunteering (excluding tutoring). Loyola expects several hundred hours of non clinical volunteering. Some of your schools are unrealistic with your MCAT scores of 507 and 510. I suggest these schools from your list:
  1. Albany Medical College
  2. Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science
  3. Drexel University College of Medicine
  4. Eastern Virginia Medical School at Old Dominion University
  5. Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University

  25. Roseman
  26. Alice Walton

If I reported my tutoring work as volunteer work, would they change that based on their system because it was not a paid position.

No. Most school are looking for non clinical volunteering such as food bank, homeless shelter not tutoring.

Tutoring is an overrepresented activity for premed admissions. Every applicant practically has some teaching, tutoring, or mentoring. It won't help you become a more attractive applicant compared to the service orientation activities of food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation.

If I already submitted my primary app and go ahead and get more of these traditional service hours, should I report them in update letters to the schools?

Yes. Or you could mention the activities during an interview.

Build upon your ongoing activities (food pantry). Get as many hours as you can. Updates must show more than incremental growth to make a difference.
