Hello! I am a nontrad who was not premed in college. Almost all my prereqs were done at a community college via a DIY post-bacc. I was a humanities major who was always involved in service, but made the shift to medicine after various service opportunities in underserved communities and realizing healthcare was the one thing that was always needed and asked for. (My PS talks about the social determinants of health and how I wanted to have a more direct role in providing care clinically).

I would like to cut down my list a bit so secondaries don't make me crazy. I was also wondering if my list is reasonable (especially with some of the higher ranked schools - just want to be a doctor!) given my lack of research and singular clinical experience. Honestly I just have no grasp on where I stand so any advice is welcome. Thank you in advance!
  1. cGPA and sGPA as calculated by AMCAS or AACOMAS
    1. both around 3.9
  2. MCAT score(s) and breakdown. Include all (non-voided) attempts.
    1. 517 (127/132/127/131), one attempt
  3. State of residence or country of citizenship (if non-US)
    1. California
  4. Ethnicity and/or race
    1. Asian
  5. Undergraduate institution or category
    1. a UC
  6. Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer)
    1. 800 hours as MA
  7. Research experience and productivity
    1. maybe 50 hours in my last semester as part of a humanities research course?
  8. Shadowing experience and specialties represented
    1. 10 hours oncology
    2. 10 hours pediatrics
  9. Non-clinical volunteering
    1. 2500+ hours in different AmeriCorps programs + various other causes/orgs I've volunteered in
  10. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)
    1. 300 hours in a service club
    2. 50 hours generic tutoring
  11. Relevant honors or awards
    1. None that I can think of unless you count the Segal Education Award or other scholarship type awards?
  12. Anything else not listed you think might be important
    1. For fun: my hobby is postcrossing - sending postcards to random people and also receiving them in return!
    2. Another fun (?) fact: I speak 3 languages because of different familial ties

Welcome to the forums.

Your shadowing strikes me as light and not completely consistent with your "purpose" to serve marginalized communities with a better understanding of SDOH. I don't know in what capacity you are an MA. I would list your Segal Americorps award in W/A.

Where in California did you grow up (or elsewhere)? Many UC schools prefer applicants who are very familiar with the region where they get most of their (local) patients.

Hi! I am from the inland empire, hence UCR. A lot of my volunteering was also based here.
MA work is in an internal medicine clinic, but also involves me translating. Will try to up the shadowing before I submit.
Thank you for your reply!
