WAMC - Starting a post-bacc and retaking science classes I didn't do so well in originally...(lower GPA and assumably lower science GPA).

Hi there, so my undergrad was tumultuous. I didn't know HOW to study properly until my final year of undergrad (All A's and B's, retook Genetics and pulled it from a D- to a B+). I was also in an abusive relationship throughout my sophomore and junior year. I didn't realize how smart I was until that final year when I began doing research with a Professor who liked me and helped me learn how to study. I'm starting a post bacc to retake some prerequisite courses and even take some that I was way too scared of taking the first time (organic chem, biochemistry) which I'm actually super excited about. That being said, I obviously have a ton of credits that would make it harder to pull that GPA and science GPA up. Just for some comfort, has anyone been in a similar scenario? Currently my cumulative GPA is 2.8, and I assume my science GPA is in a similar boat. I plan on volunteering on the weekends and shadowing an emergency vet during the night (I woke a day time job, 9 - 5, in a bio lab).

Using the format here WAMC Forum- Welcome and filling in the blanks will give us more info to make suggestions.

Getting an acceptance with <3.0 c/sGPA is going to be really challenging. There are a few posts in this sub-forum from those who have similar GPAs, and people have definitely gotten in with GPAs this low before, but it's uncommon. Definitely read through some of these posts. Applicants with these stats are often limited in the schools that will actually consider them, let alone admit them.

Imo the people with stats this low might have to be really exceptional in multiple areas in order to make up for it (experience, research, your essays, and your LORs). It will be critical for you to choose your schools wisely, especially since you are already planning to repeat courses. I'm not sure how much research you've put into the admissions process yet, but for those who have some serious academic hurdles to overcome, you have lots of legwork to do. I recommend reading these threads WAMC - Previous Low GPA, Currently in Post Bac Program & RVT and Low GPA, Non-Traditional VMCAS Applicant because it's the fastest way to get an idea of what things you should be considering as you move forward.
