State of Residence: Illinois

Undergrad Attended: Public in-state school that is not very well known
Major: Chemistry, B.S. with a Biochemistry concentration (summa cum laude)
Minority? ORM Asian Pakistani with disadvantaged/low SES status
Reapplicant? No
Nontrad? No
but I have been in undergrad for 8 yrs, never took a semester off, no masters (yet)

Shadowing Experience: 116 hrs, GP, Single clinic
Volunteering Experience: 150+ hrs, Covid vaccine administrator, underserved Chicago school mentor/volunteer, will be adding 6 year old fraternity volunteer hrs once I can get a hold of the chapter president since the chapter was suspended after I transferred schools. Had at-least 75 volunteer hrs there though.
Employment: Pharmacy technician for 2 yrs
Research:
1. Dry lab (500 hrs): health disparities research fellowship at top 10 university - poster presentation to their school of medicine on cervical cancer among transgendered patients
2. Wet lab (600 hrs+ currently ongoing ): anti-cancer drug discovery at top 10 university - cancer conference presentation + mid-author publication is planned

Other Extracurriculars:
1. Pre-health club founder and president at a rural community college I attended
2. Pre-dental club founder and president at the public hispanic serving university I recently graduated from
3. Physical Chemistry I seminar leader (akin to a TA position)
4. Physical Chemistry II seminar leader

Relevant Honors or Awards: summa cum laude, deans' list for 4 consecutive semesters, certificate of completion from my dry lab research fellowship

LOR type and strength: very strong:
1. physical chemistry professor who asked me to lead the seminar section
2. organic chemistry II professor who served as my chemistry advisor - she knows me well as I was in her office a few times a month for like 2 years
3. anti-cancer research supervisor who also served as my inorganic chemistry prof - she patented the anti-cancer drug we are working on, and she said she noted in the LOR that I was in the top 1% of all students she has ever taught. We have built a very strong bond, and I hope the letter is as good as our mentor/mentee relationship is.
4. GP who I shadowed for about 115 hours. He has told me he wrote a very strong letter outlining all of the amazing things he has noticed in me during my time shadowing at the clinic.

Misc Info/Things not stated elsewhere/Red Flags: no red flags besides bad first few yrs of college, taking 8 yrs to finally decide on a major and graduate, etc. only one F in calculus I, but that was during my directionless, aimlessly taking classes days

low GPA because of not prioritizing school before I knew dentistry

after I found dentistry, my transcript shows a 3.94 GPA in 70+ credit hours in all upper level science courses, hence why I was able to graduate summa cum laude through my university

School list: all of these schools have had my app submitted on 07/06/2022, except transcript needs to be verified so maybe my submission date will show up as late July hopefully

please let me know your thoughts. Masters is obviously something I am preparing for. My eyes are set on Barry U SMP, Midwestern IL SMP 10 month, Rutgers SMP, UIC medical physiology, Nova 1yr SMP, or mississippi college 1 yr SMP. if you have any advice on which of these SMP's would be the best fit for me, please let me know!

In general, SMP advice: cheapest with strongest articulation/linkage agreement and personalized advising to desirable programs.
Thanks for your advice. Unfortunately, finding a cheap + strong linkage SMP is quite rare. At this point, I am going for just strong linkage/name, because a stronger SMP should allow me to eventually get accepted into a cheaper in-state dental school, would you agree?

See how the cycle goes. Add more shadowing hours this summer, preferably at different office. School list looks decent enough, you could add Case or newer schoos like CA Northstate or Lincoln Memorial if you really wanted, since those might be less picky with their applicants but also pricey.

Good luck! Hoping this cycle is a success for you with this winding journey you've taken to dentistry 🙂
