So I’m a canadian student (chemical engineering bachelors and masters), and I live in Windsor so Detroit is close to home. Both my parents work in Michigan and my dad lives there so I guess you can say I’ve got a connection. My goal is Wayne state so I was just wondering what my chances were. Or if Wayne isn’t realistic if I had any other options because med school in Canada is looking like an unlikely option.
Undergrad gpa: 3.5, with last 60 credits being 3.9 + upwards trend
Masters gpa: 3.9
mcat: 520 (I’ve only written it once)
ECs (these might be a bit weak since clinical experience is frowned upon in Canada):
Shadowing : 80 hours
Volunteered as first responder : 200 hours
Life guarding/swim instructing : 2000 hours
Volunteered at hospital, cancer centre, and hospice : 250 hours total
Volunteered with Food banks and homeless : 150 hours
Camp counselling: 400 hours
Worked with kids with disabilities: 300 hours
I also teach lifeguarding, standard first aid and cpr, and airway management (so like oxygen tanks and OPAs)
I’m also published, have a good amount of research experience, have been a TA, do mock trials, been a continuous finalist in business case competitions, and have had a bunch of student leadership positions within my school community. My letters of reference are 2 from employers and 2 academic.
I don’t know if this is important but Canadian med schools usually ask for this, my hobbies: swimming, rock climbing, gym, reading, I used to be a competitive pianist and I still play casually.
Do I have a chance at Wayne state or any other MD school in the US? Thanks!!
