I had a 3.2 gpa overall from undergrad and have about 1 and 1/2 years of experience in vet med now between small animals and exotics. I’ve been denied from all schools I applied to 2 years in a row. I found a masters program for animal science and behavior where I can also choose a focus on equine which I have no experience in currently. Would this be a good idea and would it help?

Would you use the masters degree should you not get into vet school? If not, I definitely wouldn’t recommend spending money on something you won’t use. Find a masters that is a suitable plan B if you’re going to do a masters. But search through some of these WAMC threads, depending on how schools calculate GPAs and such, a masters may or may not help an applicant; it’s just hard to say. If you have schools you know you are interested in attending, research how they choose applicants and how they handle masters credits. If I had to guess from the little you’ve posted, it’s probably a GPA issue more so than a lack of equine experience holding you back, since a 3.2 is below average, especially for OOS spots. It’s not impossible to overcome a lower GPA, but it’s harder. If you make a post with your actual stats and more info we may be able to give more specific advice. I think there’s a pinned post with a suggested template.

So then would a post bacc where I retake a lot of my lower scoring classes work?

Again, depends on the school. Some will replace the grades after retakes, some will average them. Some schools care more about your last 45 credits, some care more about the overall prereq GPA. You need to go through all the schools and see how they calculate their stuff and apply smartly to places where your stats look the best they can.

I’ve now been denied from the VMCAS cycle 2 years in a row, I have close to 2000 hrs of experience between small animals and exotics. My cGPA is about a 3.2 but most of my science classes are Bs and As, I’m not sure what I can do to increase my gpa at this point I have to make up a total of 35 quality points or take an additional 70 hours with a perfect gpa to raise my gpa to a 3.5? I have no idea what to do, it’s always been my dream to get into vet school but I don’t know how I can make my gpa increase enough to be competitive.
