hey everyone,

tomorrow is my first day being on call. Some M4s told me that they use to go to the ER while on call and help out. Now, please pardon my ignorance, but I was wondering what exactly is the best approach to this and what are some things I can do to get my foot in the door and my feet wet in the ER??

thanks

It's great that you want to get down to the department. But you've gotta remember that, first, you're on an OB rotation. So your responsibilities are to (and your grade depends on) the OB service. So don't just wander on down whenever you want to.

On the other hand, there's a lot of OB/GYN that happens down in the ED. So just tell your interns and residents that you'd really like to participate in the workup of any new patient that they get consulted on down in the ED. Then make it a point to hang around whoever would go down there and just hoof it down with them, get in on the evaluation, and get used to the department.

After a couple of consults you can ask if you can head down first, work up the patient on your own for 20 mins, and then have the resident come down. That way you can do your eval, start thinking up a plan, and present it to the resident. That's always fun. Just remember to work your EM enthusiasm into your rotation somehow... don't just bypass your OB responsibilities to hang out in the ED, as tempting as it may be. 🙂
