I am currently 3rd year at an average midwest school, and am interested in a good radiology program in the midwest.

Step 1: 244
Grades: HPs so far, hopefully get a few Honors.. probably won't get AOA
Research: some surgery related chart review, no publications

what are my chances at a strong program like Michigan, Iowa, or Northwestern?

Some Honors will definitely help. Some of the better midwest programs to consider in addition the the ones you mention are University of Wisconsin, University of Chicago, Medical College of Wisconsin, Mallinckrodt (Wash U). I'd say you have a shot at most of these.

I would add Indiana U. and U. Pitt to that list

Agree to the combined list of everyone. Doubt great shot at the "big" places... Michigan, U Chicago, NW, MIR. Should easily get almost all the other interviews though. Maybe you might get one of the tougher interviews. You are just right on the cusp of going into the group that gets all the interviews... 250, AOA. It really is pretty accurate guess on where that group starts, and a few points here and there does seem to matter despite whether you think it should or not. Look at the list of interviews posted on auntminnie. I think those with less numbers come from very prestigous medical schools or go to that particular school (which are prestigous anyways).

I'm an M4 applying to radiology programs in the midwest, and have stats similar to yours. Ties to the midwest will probably boost your application.

Among the programs mentioned, I received invitations from the University of Chicago, Indiana, Iowa, Medical College of Wisconsin, as well as Loyola and University of Illinois-Chicago. Rejections from Wisconsin and Northwestern. I didn't apply to Michigan and Mallinckrodt since I didn't feel that I would be considered a strong candidate.

Do your best on the rest of your clinical rotations, try to schedule a radiology rotation at your home med school early in M4 year, and perhaps do an away rotation at your top program.
Best of luck
