Want to know if im a good candidate for a bs/md program?

im a high school junior now... 16.. with a gpa at 4.3- 4.4 weighted...ranked top 10 of my class and am in the Commonwealth Governors School of Virginia which is a program for high level students in high school around our area...and my SAT score is around 1650

have my mind set on being a doctor and am curious if i have a shot of getting into the direct bs/md program

EC's- young democrats, national honor society, SADD, key club, link crew, freshman basketball in 9th grade, jv tennis in 10th grade and again in 11th and 12th.

Volunteering/others- red cross, nursing home, moss free clinic, hospital, national youth leadership forum on medicine camp at the university of maryland

10th grade- 1 AP and 1 DE course...DE= college level course
11th grade- 2 AP and 1 DE course
12 grade- not sure yet..somewhere around 3-4 AP and maybe 1 DE

I have taken the SAT multiple times and just cant quite get it much higher...im really nervous that my SAT score will bring me down but i dnt know

i have my eyes set on the bs/md program at virginia commonwealth university...but their SAT minimum is 1910... so im planning to applying to some other out of state bs/md programs as well

the things is i dnt know if im wasting my time trying to get into these programs or if i actually have a shot

i would appreciate it for some feedback and some advice..thanks you guys so much

I agree that your biggest problem is the SAT. VCU is considered a lower-tier BS/MD program. You're still a junior so you still have about a year to improve on your test scores. Even if things don't improve as you would like, I suggest you turn to the regular route where you apply in college. Another option is to try the ACT, and forget about submitting the SAT altogether.

If you're looking for other Virginia BS/MDs, I believe EVMS has one with a few universities. VCU also has an early acceptance program, where you apply earlier than usual to their medical school as an undergrad.

hey the SAT score is WAY too low. I agree with that. Also I think that unless you get your score up it will make your excellent grades look like they are SUPER inflated.

My feeling is that if you can get into a BS/MD you probably would have an easy time getting into medical school the normal way.

Ok so let's say if I were to get my SAT score up to around the 1800 range... Do you guys think I would have a shot? Because of what I've done other than my SAT or do you guys think I need above a 1910 to even be considered??

in short...sorry to say you would not be the ideal candidate.
Most of those students have SAT scores averaging 1300/1600....whereas you have around a 1600/2400.

Even if you had a 1910...statistically you would be at the low end of the pool of applicants considered. You would need to get into the 2100+ range to be in the mid-high pool of students they take. Everything else on your application looks good make sure you emphasize your EC's if you end up applying.

You probably need something closer to a 2100 at the very least to be considered unless you had truly amazingggg other ECs and whatnot to make up for it....a lot of people even accepted for an interview in that program have 2200s and pretty good ECs. You also probably need some decent scores on SAT subject tests.

You already have the GPA down it seems like and your ECs look decent, but you probably really want to try to up that SAT if you want a shot.

yeah, I had a 2250 and didn't get into VCU's BS/MD... I guess I wasn't what they were looking for.

Ok so let's say then I apply and do not get in directly from high school... What are the chances that I will get in if I where to apply at the end of my sophmore year and what would I need to do in order to get in my second turn around? And i'm asking because I know vcu gives u the option of applyin at the end of ur second year... However I do know they make u take the mcat but require a score of much less than what's needed if I were to take this route.

Anyway, you might just want to consider going the traditional route. You definitely don't have to go the BS/MD route.

Yea I have a small window open for the regular route but I really want to get into the bs/md program just cause you do not have to take the mcat or that the mcat score is a bit lower than what really is needed. And I know that I have a lot of work to do and I'm gunna work my ass off to try to get in!

Just took a practice sat and got a 1800...im on my way up there..just wait... ill be one of the top dogs gettin into this bs/md program come next year!

OP, with a 1650, you are not competitive for ADMISSION to many selective schools, let alone admission to a combined BS/MD program. In fact, it's harder to get into some of the combined programs than it is to get into medical school itself.

You should concentrate on your final year of high school, and your college applications. Go to a school that is a good fit for you and do well there. Get your bachelors degree, and apply broadly to medical schools. If you have the dedication and the drive, you'll get in, assuming that you improve your standardized test taking skills.
