I'm interested in tutoring the MCAT and/or Step 1, but I was wondering how to go about doing this. Where do people post a notice of availability for tutoring? I've heard of WyzAnt, but was wondering if people use others for medical-related tutoring. Any leads would be appreciated!

There are plenty of companies out there if you type in things like tutoring med school, step 1 tutoring, etc youll find them (some are onlline tutoring which is nice). Kaplan and the other big dog companies also have jobs for tutors.

Lol I dont get it! what did I do?

Hey guys! I'm wondering what the best car brand is to buy! I've only ever heard of GuyWhoDoesStuff Motors (trademark pending), and have never even heard of the obvious ones like Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, Kaplan, Chevrolet, or Mercedes!

Help a brotha out!

oh i get it. i sound like a troll. i'm not even on wyzant, the whole point of the thread was to explore alternatives to it.

Just curious but how exactly are you going to tutor for step 1?

I thought about it for a while but then I realized that it would just amount to a 5 min talk consisting of "do as many questions as you can from UWorld/USMLE Rx/Kaplan, do all the NBMEs, do the free 150, memorize everything in FA, and read Pathoma."

Unless you're planning on putting together a better q bank or review book what's the point?

Maybe one on one tutoring either in person or thru Skype?

If you've been working hard, done all the qbanks, etc. etc. there are patterns that emerge, both in how questions are asked and how certain topics tend to be presented. If you've been conscientious and noted these down, they can be really valuable to someone who hasn't put in that kind of effort. Same reason why my used books sell higher than MSRP. I have all the high yield stuff marked out (qbanks/qbooks/note packets), as well as everything the professors mention in class. Towards the test I make mindmaps of what I think is high yield and the ways in which it'll be presented on the test. If you just read that stuff (less than 1/4 the text), you're sure to pass the tests at my school.

That aside, tutoring has to do with explaining stuff in the simplest way possible, in a way that your student can relate. You can only do that if you understand it and if you understand your student. Takes time and effort to understand things. If you're a decent tutor, you can save someone serious time. I've tutored for the SAT and MCAT in the past, but I'm done with that.

It may not be tutoring, but get in contact with test prep companies. I just got a job at Firecracker as a content editor (they're probably still hiring), and I got in contact with other test prep companies too before that. I also was in contact with people from QBanks, but that didn't pan out due to my M3 status. Maybe consider talking to school advisors as to what other students have done.

Also, I have personally had great experience with WyzAnt. I never saw anything related to med school, but I tutored math and chemistry extensively during M1 and the year before med school. If you're ok with undergrad material, then absolutely give them a try.
