Hi,

I took the August MCAT, was complete at my schools mid-October, and now have not heard anything--i.e. I have gotten no interviews.

Am I screwed for this year--should I just plan to apply for '06?

Thanks,

BB

It's been said many times on this board that interviews go on even in May. There may be hope yet. Many of us are still waiting. How are your stats?

which schools have you been completed?

Hi,

I took the August MCAT (first time) and got a 25Q. That was after about 6 weeks of hardcore studying. I am just mentally challenged, I know.

My GPA overall is 3.45. Post-bacc science is 3.7. Grad school is 3.0. I'm married and 27 years old. I took all my pre-med requirements for the first time in a post-bacc program plus anatomy and physio this fall. Since the August MCAT, I have attempted to improve my app by taking anatomy and physio (A), working full-time as a clinical research assistant in the surgery dept. at a hospital, volunteering on the weekends with low-income women, preparing to re-take the MCAT, and will take cell bio or orgo 2 over the summer.

Any advice? I feel down and out.

Thanks,

BB

Oh, I forgot.

I am complete at: Rush, NYMC, Jefferson, Vermont.

I have gotten pre-interview rejections from the rest of them.

I heard NYMC was the Finch of the East yet I can't even get an interview. Do I suck or what?????

For those of us with the low MCAT dilemma, we have to accept that we're going to be the last to get interviews/acceptances (if at all). Which means we're looking at Feb-April for our interviews. It sucks, I know. But schools want to look at all the "top" applicants first, and unfortunately for us, that means those with higher MCAT/GPA scores. But that doesn't mean we need to lose hope just yet. You still have some schools that are looking at you, so I wouldn't panic. Granted you need to plan realistically and study for the April MCAT for next year's application cycle, but I wouldn't say that all is lost for this year.

I'm still waiting on 6 schools (all others have rejected me too), and I also applied to DO schools just recently. So I figure if/when I get interviews it's not going to be until Feb, at the earliest. I think that's just the plight (sp?) of a low MCAT score. We must live with it! 🙂 Good luck, though. I hope we all get some interviews soon! :luck:

No, relax. Most of my interview invites last year were made in the spring, only one was made in the fall and that one was an invite email on 12/13 or something. Its the price you pay for taking the august mcat, DONT FREAK OUT.

I am also an August MCATer (retake after April). The first time, I got a 25Q, the second, a 29N (go figure). I was complete everywhere around 11/3 (late LOR writers). My problem is my college grades from 20 years ago were crap. This time around my GPA is 3.7 with a double science major in 3 years, but my AMCAS shows a GPA of about 3.0 (like I said - BIG screw ups 20 years ago).

I have yet to hear anything favorable, tho - five rejections, no interviews, haven't heard yet from 8 places. The rejections have dribbled in, but seem to be picking up since I've gotten two in the past two days. I'm still holding out hope, but I applied to all allopathic schools. If this doesn't pan out, I'm going to apply DO next year.

Look at it this way: It ain't over until the fat adcoms sing.

BB-

It sounds like you are a strong applicant minus your MCAT score. It will be very beneficial for you to have a higher MCAT score to offset an average GPA. Continue on your current track, but plan on taking the April MCAT and re-applying for next year if you are dead set on an allopathic program. Another route you may consider is a DO program. You are a very strong applicant for most DO programs now, and many of the deadlines for these schools are not until Jan-Feb.

The only advice I can give you if you are down and out is don't give up!

"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by the dust, the sweat, and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms and the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who in the end, at best, knows the triumph of high achievement, and at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be among those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat."

Your MCAT is way below the average for accepted applicants. It's an annoying reality that the MCAT is very important. If I were you and dead set on allopathic I would start studying NOW for the April MCAT to make my application stronger for next year. You said you studied 6 weeks but that isn't really very much -- some people prepare for YEARS. You will see how much better you will do in the app process by raising your score by just a few points.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one here waiting....and waiting....

Did August MCAT, was complete by November 1st but so far, I've had about a third of my schools reject me pre-interview, and one putting me on 'hold'. All other schools are still 'reviewing' my stuff. 🙁

To bump up my GPA, I am planning on doing taking some post-bacc classes this semester plus I am studying for the mcat right now. I am also planning on volunteering, and hopefully get someone to let me shadow them. Next year, I do plan on applying DO as well since I seem to be pretty competitive for them.

It's nice to hear that next year isn't too late but still disheartening. I remember most of my friends back in college were getting tons of interviews by now (not to mention acceptances), of course, doing their MCAT in April helped and probably having better credentials was a plus too!

For the rest of us, I think we should all keep in mind that the most unpredictable part of the med school journey is getting in. But remember, we've all surivived our classes, did our MCAT, so this is just that last leg of our premed journey! :luck:

Hope and prayers for all of yall!

A 28 R is a solid score. Don't let this site get you down. Be patient and I wish you good luck!

To make all of you august MCAT takers feel ever so slightly better, i took the april MCAT(34), 3.5 gpa, I was complete the first week of SEPT. everywhere. so far got 1 interview, still waiting to hear from about 12 schools

I took the Aug. MCAT and was complete at schools in the last week of Nov. I've only heard from 1 school for an interview so far, but nobody is even sending me rejections...I just want something at this point! I haven't even gotten a secondary from UCSF, which blows (I like to say that that's because I'm out of state though!) Anyways, I feel I've jumped through enough hoops in this process and I just want some closure. I'm sure that's how most of us feel exept for the perfect people who have already gotten in to all the frekin ivey league schools in the country (I'm not jealous or anything!)
