After searching for a Wash U thread for hours, I've decided to start my own. I'm just curious who else is headed to St Louis.

ok you wash u peeps. i have decided there is not nearly enough enthusiasm for wustl on this forum. all we ever hear is how wash u is a numbers ***** and is filled with gunners and people who spend 19 hours a day in the library. we're all so lucky to be attending this awesome med school. i say we stand up for ourselves and be proud to say we will be bears next year. who's with me?! 😀
 
Hey guys......congratulations on being accepted to such a great school. As syranope noted, there isn't much enthusiasm for WashU around these parts, but to the non-believers, I just say f*ck 'em. I am on the waitlist at WashU, and since it is my top choice, I am hoping and praying that I'll be able to join you guys as a classmate here in a few months. Wish me luck guys, as the pessimism is starting to rear its ugly head as more time go by :horns:

I'm with ya! I'm stoked for Wash U. As for the "bears", I didn't even know that was their mascot. Do they have good sports teams?

Anyway, their med school rocks and people were a lot nicer than those at other schools (namely: Columbia). I think it will be great to go to such a good school in the midwest.
 
I'll be in Olin Hall. I didn't stay there when I interviewed, however... What is it like?
 
yes, they're the bears. i knew it was the right school for me as soon as i heard that. in high school i was a bruin and in college, a bear. it's kismet. and, no, they havce no good sports. they kind of suck. but i've become familiar with that coming from my college.

and olin hall is, well, a dorm. the large singles are big enough, the floor is linoleum, the closets are small, the furniture sucks, etc. there's communal bathrooms and one kitchen every two floors. and sound travels really really well. but you can't beat the location, and it would be nice to be near a lot of other students. i'm living off-campus at a really nice place that's not too much more than staying in olin hall. all personal preference, i guess...

well that's not entirely true. washu's women's volleyball and basketball teams are routinely national champs of D3.
 
Hey, I will be heading to St. Louis this fall...Im also gonna live off campus (about 10 minutes away), couldn't see going back into a dorm. Are most people who are getting apartments going to live in the Central West End? I couldnt really find any places there that I liked, so I looked elsewhere...ended up with a nice 2BR townhouse for only 700 a month.

Oh, I was just curious anyway. I wish the summer could end so we could all start. Does anyone else feel this way?
 
I think the Aug. 10 start date is early enough! I'm spending this summer relaxing, reading, and volunteering for a political campaign. It may be the last summer I'll be at home... Savor the free time while you still have it.

We need more Wash U pride here on SDN. Anyone as excited as I am about next year, please let yourself be heard!!
 
i feel ya, ridirkulous. the last three days or so, i have caught the med school bug and am dying to get started. i took a year off after college, so my "last summer" has kind of been going on for 13 months now. i'm definitely ready to get back into the academic mode.

where's everyone from, anyways? i'll start - colorado native here.

Are any of you doing the WUMP program? It might be good, especially if you're itching to get started!
 
I was wondering if anyone has had success using the financial aid awards access site on the School of Medicine web site. I still havent heard from the financial aid office, althought it has only been a little over a month since I was first accepted...

yay, another wash u-er! i saw you went to uri. i went to undergrad in r.i. too. what a small world. one question - is there anywhere to get a free netter's once you get to school? i know some schools will give you one free if you sign up for a credit card or something. anything like that at wash u, or am i gonna be stuck shelling out the big bucks? oh yeah, and any books that we absolutely should have for first year?

As far as I remember, joining the AMA gets you scrubs, Stedman's medical dictionary and Rohen's atlas. Rohen's has actual photographs of cadaver dissections and such. An AMA membership costs in the neighborhood of $80 for 4 years (if memory serves). Anyway, you will be contacted shortly by the Wash U chapter with details.

A membership with AMSA comes with a Netters atlas, but you have to fill out a credit card application (you have no obligation to actually open an account though, you only have to fll out the application). I took a membership with the AMA and then managed to get Netter's from the barnes and noble website since they were giving a 20% discount or something. Both are good atlases; I ended up using Netter's a lot more.

As far as other books go, this will vary from person to person. You will need a Grant's dissector for anatomy. Most people (myself included) just studied from class notes which are quite comprehensive. Some people did study from textbooks--Big Moore and Little Moore being the most popular. Little Moore is definitely more readable, but Big Moore has a lot more detail. Both are good references.

Course notes suffice for most other courses. You may want to buy Lippincott's biochem, especially if you have never taken a biochem course before. But again, the course notes will work well for that course. BRS Physio and/or Physiology by Costanzo are both great books. BRS is authored by Costanzo, but is more concise. Its definiely a great review.

You will probably need an atlast for histology, although the online Menton collection is a great resource. You guys should be reciieving the Dis-O guide shortly. That will have a better list of books you should buy. I would wait till you get to med school, because a lot of upper classmen will be selling their books in the first few weeks of august. However, the books do sell out really quickly. Buying used books online (half.com, etc.) is also a great option.

Glad to see that someone started a wash u thread too! How did we get a reputation for being workaholic number ******? I am most certainly a numbers *****, but my laziness rivaled any other premed I've ever met...washu kids unite to stop the libel!

I'll be in Olin next year by the way, let me know if you will be too...I can't believe I'm going back to a dorm...but I can't live by myself, i need some socializing to stay sane! see you all in a month or so

Do you like biking? I sure do! I'm probably bringing my bike along with my car to St. Louis. I'll be in Olin as well.
 
hey guys, nice to see someone started a thread. There's about 20 people from our class here for the summer already mostly doin research and wandering around the city.
pauleuglis- definitely bring your bike, it seems like everyone in the city has one, and forest park is a great place for it if you're in the cwe.
Syranope- if you are who i think you are, your roommate just moved in today and i must admit, i'm jealous coz your apartment is huge.

yup i've been racing bikes for about 4 years now...If you're going to be in olin you'll quickly recognize me as the guy heading out on weekends all kitted out in bike gear (aka clown suit)...just hope I can find some quiet roads around StL!

Hey do you happen to know if olin allows people to store a bike in their room?
 
For all those in Olin:

Do you know what floor you are going to be on? I'm on the 9th floor--all dudes, but it has a kitchen.

Anybody doing WUMP? I would, but my little sis is gettin married that week.
 
Hey, I'll be sixth floor olin...can't believe i let myself go back to a dorm, but it should be nice and social and its only a year right?

So the ninth floor has a kitchen eh? I guess that means no kitchen on even floors...bollocks...should have applied earlier! oh well...

No WUMP for me...too busy enjoying the summer of sloth, which will soon be over

St. Louis isn't great for biking if you're on the streets. Midwest drivers are oblivious and unpredictable. Fortunately, WUSM is right next to Forest Park and there's the 7 mile loop around the outside (rode it every day to work from my apt in University City) or the many paths on the inside.

As for housing, the Central West End is nice in that you're close enough to walk and it's got a decent cultural feel. I lived there for a year and really loved it. You'll all get to know about Bob Jamerson (you might have seen him already dancing around the streets) very well if you walk to school through the CWE each day.

Hope you guys enjoy WashU! I went to undergrad there and am somewhat jealous that you guys will get your education at the Barnes-WashU complex. It's truly an amazing school with seemingly endless resources.
 
What do people think about joining the AMA? Any opinions? Who is going to read faithfully their four year subscription to Missouri Medicine?

Hi everyone. I'll also be living in Olin, 6th floor I think. I was also too lazy this summer to apply for WUMP. Does anyone here play guitar or any other instruments? I play guitar and am looking for people to jam with. See you all in like 3 weeks.

hey all,

I was just wondering how many of you have parents that will be going to the white coat ceremony? My mom's angry that my dad can't make it, and i'm trying to reassure her that not all the parents show up for this thing!

by the way aaron, i'm sure I'll be spending some time up on the 7th floor...I'm on 6 (room 606, stop on by everyone!), and there's apparently no kitchens on even numbered floors, curses!
 
hey guys, im applying to washu, and i was wondering if someone can tell me what st. louis is like.....is it diverse (aka lots of diff ethnicities, races etc)? urban? any thoughts on what the city is like? thanks!

I didn't even tell my parents about the white coat ceremony. I don't think it would be worth the money for them to fly out just to see me put on a short white coat. I'll let them know about graduation but, as far as ceremonies go, I think this one is pretty insignificant. Considering Wash U draws students from all over the country, I'd actually be surprised if that many parents do come.

Yeah, that's what I've been telling them. We're from the Chicagoland area, so its not too long of a haul...but if coming to this thing involved a plane, I'd probably tell them to just forget about it.
 
I've also heard that the white coat ceremony isn't a very big deal. However, one or both of my parents may be attending.

It's not as diverse as cities on the coast. As far as the city itself it's pretty much an even mix of white and black with the usual distribution of the most urban areas being more black. BJH isn't quite the gun & knife club as SLU is closer to the downtown happenings but there's plenty of trauma to go around. And since Tenet's hospitals are going to hell in a handbasket BJH ends up providing a lot of the indigent care which provides plenty of fun practice. The medical center itself is fairly diverse in terms of housestaff. As you get further into southern Missouri (where you'll be getting quite a few patients from--Poplar Bluff) you'll get a more homogeneous mix of your stereotypical southern rural population.

The city is cheap with low, flat housing costs. Buying a starter home is definitely a possibility. Renting a "nice" apartment will definitely cost you less than $900 per month. Utility costs are fairly low as are food costs. Parking is definitely not as great a problem as the coasts or Chicago. Parking tickets are generally pretty cheap as well. Traffic is generally benign compared to coast cities and even in the middle of rush hour it's fairly easy to get somewhere in 30 minutes. People run red lights, keep that in mind. And no one knows how to drive in snow and god forbid there's ever ice on the road.

The social life is pretty representative of a midwestern city. Nothing will be handed to you but as long as you can read and either open a newspaper or go to the newspaper websites there's always something to do in one of the various parts of the city. All sports except basketball are represented. Weekends to Chicago and Nashville are pretty easy and day trips to wineries nearby are also easy.
