I am still deciding on a dental school. I am trying to decide between the University of Washington and the University of Nebraska. Any advice, or pros and cons of these schools would be appreciated. Thanks

panfesak,

Congrats on getting into both schools. I will be attending PENN next year. How come I didn't choose UW? Look at the facilities: even the dental students say their facilities suck, and the ambassadors that I had called their school a "dungeon." The attitude is very poor and the new curriculum is screwing people over left and right. I don't know if you noticed it but people just didn't seem happy at UW. Even the ambassadors when I asked them "are you happy here" said, UW is a great school, but there are a lot of problems. I was so unhappy to hear that since I thought UW was my top choice. Most people thought they were happy, since they were saving so much money but they were so misguided. Now the decrease in the WA budget and tax revenues is strangling the curriculum. But these are my observations and what people told me at the interview. Honestly, I was the least impressed with my home school.

Go to UW if you just want to be a general dentist or do research. The curriculum is so tough that only 1-3 people specialize since most people just hit around the "C" range to pass.

Yeah, money is a huge factor but I know I would not be happy here. Their ego is too high, i just wished there were ACTUAL rankings so UW could stop daydreaming that they are #1.

I don't know about Nebraska, but I had a friend who graduated there two years ago. He was pretty happy with his choice. He surprised me when he went to Nebraska over Columbia (his other school choice).

By the way when did you interview at UW? Do you mind if you tell me your stats? You could email me or PM me.

Thanks and congrats again.

There are other people on SDN who had similar views I did. I hope they also put their thoughts up too.

Let me give you a little scenerio,

I know this guy who interviewed on Nov. 4 at UW. He was part of a group that was the second to interview. The interview went extremely well, and the interviewer told him, "You are exactly what we are looking for." So, he waited anxiously for severa weeks. On Dec. 2 he calls the school to check on his application and is told, "Oh, it looks like you are invited to an interview!"

Hmmm. Professional?....NOT AT ALL. This same guy has heard nothing at all from UW and then just yesterday he gets a postcard stating "We have received your secondary application, everything is now complete and we are considering it."

So, did they just realize that it was complete and that is why he hasn't heard anything or what? As far as being relentlessly Cold and impersonal, it doesn't get any better than UW........so, in a few short words....GO TO NEBRASKA. My family dentist graduated from Nebraska and says it was the best decision he ever made...he even waited a year to apply so he could claim residency!

I am a current dental student at OHSU but I applied to UW and Nebraska (where I did my undergrad) the same year I applied to OHSU. UW was cold, impersonal, and hard to work with. Stiff Competition among students was openly encouraged by my interveiwer and I got a general feeling of hostility among students while talking with a few that took me around that day. Nebraska was friendly, encouraging, and always took the time to answer my concerns and questions. Their class size is small (about 50) and while the facilities are slightly older, the faculty seemed warm and friendly. The only reason I didn't go to Nebraska was the fact that I wanted to attend school in the Northwest. Also consider that out-of-state students are almost sure to pay in-state tuition at Nebraska. Make sure and ask about that if you haven't already. Good luck!
