3.7/3.7 GPA
38Q MCAT

probably average - below average volunteering, shadowing
above average research
assume interview skills not great, will work on them though

Asian male

I applied super late and without safeties last time, so I'm paranoid this time.

For safeties, I have Drexel, Temple, NYMC, Jefferson, MCW, GWU
Matches, UW, Baylor, USC, Tufts, UM, UVA, Vanderbilt, Chicago, Case

Does this list seem safe?

I like it, I say run with it!

Can you give details about your clinical experience? What did you improve since the last application?

I think your list is fine as it is.

chicago is not a match by numbers alone because it is a small school that's big on finding applicants that "fit"

uw is virtually impossible to get into oos if not applying md-phd.

also, id toss vandy, michigan and baylor into the "reach" pile. just about everyone applying will have solid stats, research, and clinical + volunteering.

+1. My thoughts exactly. Consider Albany, SUNY, Loma Linda, maybe Creighton. What about Oregon?

By UW, are you referring to Washington, or Wisconsin? I imagine redlight was referring to Wisconsin...if the OP means Washington, keep it on your list (obviously).

Hey everyone, thanks for the responses. Clinical experience since last time - 40 hours shadowing with two separate doctors, probably 150 hours hospital volunteering. Last application was two years ago, only ~20 hours shadowing, ~30 hours volunteering. I've been working as a research scientist since graduation (May 2008). I am a Washington resident so I am in-state and that's why I consider it a "match" Also note I am only re-applying to Chicago, USC, and UW. If you meant MCW, Isn't that a private school? I know they have a heavy emphasis on residents during the interview, but it seems like after that, they are okay with OOS students. Maybe I am wrong on this...

Loma Linda - not seventh day adventist and I heard they want that
Albany, Creighton - I'll look into these, thanks
SUNY, Oregon - Aren't these all out of state schools? Looks like Oregon accepts a significant number OOS

Um, I thought that his "matches" were basically reach schools lol. I didn't realize they actually thought they were good matches for the schools. Oops.

Just to clarify there are two MD schools in Wisconsin, MCW and University of Wisconsin. MCW is private, and majority of matriculants are OOS. UW in Madison is public, and it looks like recent classes have been ~75:25 in vs out. Oregon appears to have been roughly 1/3 OOS recently. You are roughly 90th percentile for OHSU MCAT-wise though.

Albany Medical College, and the like, would be excellent 'safeties' for you with your stats, IMO. I think your reaches are ok, maybe replacing Baylor with Creighton or something along those lines.
