Hey guys!

For Washington State pre-requisites, they require courses like Genetics (3 semester units or 4.5 quarter units) and Biochemistry (4 semester units or 6 quarter units). But I go to UC Irvine where we are only offered 1 course of biochemistry and 1 course of Genetics, each worth 4 quarter units only.

So does that mean I don't meet the requirements? I have never had this problem with any of the other schools I have applied to. I have applied to UCSD, UCSF, USC, UOP, and Western. Please help?

Hi there. That's a tough one to answer. I graduated from WSU and took both of those courses. It seems like in situations like this, either the school will understand your situation and just want you to take the courses that are closest to what they want (take the courses at UC Irvine, even though they are short on credits). In other situations, the school is very strict and wants to make sure you get enough hours in those subjects.

You should e-mail WSU and ask them most definitely. I know that genetics and biochem are both offered online through their distance degree program. I took biochem during summer a while back on campus and did the genetics course online the following summer. They might want you to take their courses... who knows.

I suggest contacting WSU just to be sure. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply, Careypotpie.

I just called WSU and they said I have to take additional courses to fulfill the minimum credit. Like, take classes that chem majors take in order to get enough units for biochem. And I'm a bio major. That means I have a BUNCH of classes to take now in my senior year that I had not planned on taking. Probably not gonna apply to WSU anymore, would be too much of a hassle.

Oh no! That's too bad. Well I guess if you change your mind, remember that they offer those two classes online if you are interested...

I took a bunch of extra classes for schools that I didn't really end up applying to or getting into, so I know it's annoying. I don't even want to THINK about the money I spent.

But it does have a happy ending and I am starting school next week at UW.

In your situation, it's WSU's loss🙂 Good luck!

I might be interested in the online biochem course at WSU. I looked on their distance ed website and found the genetics course but not the biochem course. Could someone please point me in the right direction?
