I don't have a particular specialty in mind yet, but would like to keep doors open. I grew up in CA and can imagine myself settling down here in the future. Trying to negotiate aid with both schools and I have a feeling WashU is more receptive to that.
WashU (90K)
Pros:
- seems more supportive, no ranking, no AOA, basically P/F
- better ranking and reputation
- more flexible curriculum to allow room for ECs/research/different learning styles
- exposure to different patient populations
- seems to have no problem matching to CA???
Cons:
- not too excited about the location, weather (but I could learn to like it?)
- no support system nearby
- more expensive tuition, but probably lower cost of living
UC Irvine (70K)
Pros:
- closer to home, friends and family, great support system
- familiarity with location and the communities there
- seems to match pretty decently in CA, takes their own students
Cons:
- tougher curriculum, has some ranking and honors in clerkships
- feels comfortable but less "shiny and new" compared to WashU
- lower ranking
Thoughts?
