Hi to all my fellow Canucks,

Just a heads up, Waterloo is already sending out interview dates via E-mail.

I just got an email today, even though it was sent out a couple days ago. Why didn't I get it the day they sent it??? Because the email they sent me went straight to my junk mail!!!! 😱 So Hotmail users (and probably Yahoo, gmail, etc) that have got your Waterloo apps in already....CHECK YOUR JUNK MAIL REGULARLY!!!

Best of luck to everyone!👍

PS. I was a keener and have had my application in for a month, so that is probably why I am in the first group to hear back.

Do you have a better chance at getting admitted if you go to the on campus interview vs waiting a month later for them to come to your home province?

Ooh congrats and thanks for the update! I will be checking my email too often now ha ha ha.

I dropped off my application at the school a month ago as well but I think one of my two referees hasn't sent in the CAF yet. Were your confidential assessment forms received a month ago as well? Otherwise I think I won't hear for a while because I'm not a strong applicant. But we shall see! When is your interview?

Yeah, I sent everything in right away, LORs and all. My interview is in the second week of January, at the University of Waterloo. Looks like they are also doing interviews in some applicants home provinces (well at least for the West and New Brunswick I think), but those aren't until February.

Best of luck!

they told me that they dont need the lors to give you an interview- they're due in jan anywaz- wow!!! congrats- remember to give feedback interview asap! they just got everything today🙂 do you mind pming your stats to me? i am nervous about it.....

wow already...I thought they weren't going to start to look at the applications until after the due date..
(runs to hand in application.....)

Congrats to those who were invited for an interview!

It seems like Waterloo is going through their admissions process a lot earlier than they have in past years. Does that mean that they'll be giving out final acceptances earlier too? Hopefully the dates will coincide with the American schools, so it'll be easier to make decisions.

Waterloo definitely definitely going through the admission process faster this year. They will make final decisions by the first week of APRIL...

So...I see from the thread below that some people are ALREADY getting invited to interviews at Waterloo..

What is the meaning of this!?!?

The waterloo application deadline hasn't passed yet (December 14th) so they haven't recieved all applications ( ie, they got mine today).

How can they do interviews when they haven't got their total application pool yet?

And does this lower the chances for those of us who didn't send it in early? For example, their website says the letters of recommendation are to be in by january 31st...AND the OAT has to be written by Dec 31st...

Before applying I called them and they said that sending an application early or late doesnt matter in terms of admission..

So what the hell?

I think you're fine,

They are probably sending out these early invitations to exceptional applicants. I know in previous years they accepted exceptional applicants (ie high GPA) without an interview and I think someone told me, or I read on this forum, that this year everyone who is accepted will be interviewed. My application was received Nov 14th and I haven't heard anything because my GPA isn't competative. So right now they are probably sending out invites to the exceptional applicants with like 90%+ averages. The rest of us who are mediocre will have to wait until everyone applies so they can pick and choose the best of us for interviews. lol

They told me the same thing.

I heard that ppl did not get interviews and it was actually a smaller percentage of the class who did the interview in the past. Can anyone confirm this?

Why this sudden change?

Thats weird that Waterloo is setting up interviews via email, cuz i called them and they told me that they phone the applicants for an interview around Jan/Feb.

Ya but for amazing applicants they don't need to wait until everyone applies, because they are amazing and how many applicants are going to apply with a 95% average? Not many, and Waterloo wants them ALL. This is my explanation but perhaps I am wrong. But it makes me happy to hear that they are on the ball this year and have started inviting people for interviews.

really? ( rushes to TD to start asking if they loan out money is US dollars... needs more than the allocated 80K....unless living in a box is alright...or the library....)

yeah I know they all want the high graders....who doesnt? wonder if experience or personality counts for anything if grades arent their best assets?

imagine that all the americans wanted to come to canada because they had two schools- one in spanish and another in english, do you think the scope of optometry would be reversed- ie canada like the states and the states with little therapeutics and not loads of specialty clinics......

if so, i think the american students would hate how their dollar is doing at the moment mwahaha the tables have turned...just wondering...as you can see i am procrastinating from studying my one credit phgy lab......

I handed my application in last week and just got asked for an interview today!!!

So everyone should start getting an email soon.....

yeah I sent mine in last Monday, and got the invite for the interview exactly 1 week after.

As far as why things may be a bit different...it's because Waterloo's changing to fit the more "American" style of learning. They have this new director guy from Boston that's apparently amazing, I was just talking to a 4th year student a couple of weeks ago, and now Waterloo's looking to get more clinic experience, like the American Schools already have.

Should be fun, I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm a current 2nd year opt student at Waterloo. Just to answer a few questions that have come up in this thread. Yes, it is true - there is a new director at the UW and the admissions process is going through some very needed updating! They are changing the classes slightly and working on getting clinical experience much earlier for the class of 2012.

It is true - the admissions process is based very heavily on grades. The incoming class will find out earlier this year about their acceptances. It is my understanding that people will still be accepted without interveiws if they have an exceptional application.

To comment on something someone said eariler "I heard that ppl did not get interviews and it was actually a smaller percentage of the class who did the interview in the past". This is definitely NOT true. Although people have been accepted without interviews, there are more people in my class that had an interview compared to those that didn't!!

Good luck!

I was just wondering...does anyone know how the interviews at University of Waterlooo are and what questions they ask?

Thanks a lot 🙂

I am also wondering about this. I applied in early December and was asked for an interview by December 20th. I am a resident of BC so I am not sure if it is worth the extra money to fly out to Waterloo or if I should just interview in Vancouver. Does anyone know if they frown about interviewing in your home province?

Thanks!

I have interviewed with Waterloo twice in the past, both times in my home province (the opportunity to go to Waterloo wasn't available).

I'm not too sure about how they view interviewing in Waterloo vs. home province.

It's great to hear waterloo is working on their program! More clinical time would be key.. I have been hearing not so good things about their program.. so hopefully they will become more like the states!
Interview on Feb 8 with them.. ee.
