I know UW does not release any stats on their school. But I was just wondering if anyone had any info, or ballpark figures on their stats.

Entering GPA, OAT
Passing Rates on Boards etc.

Even estimates will help.
Thanx.

The Average GPA of successful applicants is typically ~85%, and I think the average OAT is usually about 360. However, I don't think they are too picky about the OAT as long as you have no individual score below 300. In the words of the former admissions director; "a poor OAT score will not break an application."

I can't be too sure about the pass rate on boards, but I was once told by a prof. that it is 100% (or maybe a little less), but I just don't know if that was for sitting the exams for the first time or if it included any rewritters (if there are any).

And I just recieved this in my email today:
The UW Optometric Students' Society (UWOSS) is hosting a Pre-Optometry
Information Session for those students interested in applying to the Optometry
program at some point.

Date: 2nd February 2005
Time: 7pm
Place: Optometry Building, Rm 347.

There will be student speakers to advise participants on the application
process and to talk about life as an Optometry student. Professors will speak
about the 4 year program and the profession itself. A tour of the facilities
and refreshments will be provided afterwards.

For any additional information contact [email protected] or
[email protected].

Thanks,
UWOSS Exec

there people i know who got into Waterloo optometry and they tell me for a fact that people have gotten in with low low averages. ie. below 75% (one girl had a 71%), but her father was an optometrist that knew people in the faculty. Therefore, the stats on the webpage are lies. They usually say 85% to make it seem high, but in reality, it's a very large range. Many are in the 70's. The 71% girl's initials starts with D.

I don't know how someone with less than 75 could possibly get in when it is the strict policy that the minimum acceptable average is 75? And I really don't believe your claim that this daughter of an optometrist was in anyway favoured in such a way - the application process at UW is blind, the committee knows neither your name, age, origin, race or sex, only a number used to identify you. Furthermore, it is completely against the interest of the school to admit someone with such low stats because they are much more likely to fail the curiculum leaving a hole in the class and a hole in the schools funding since that person cannot be replaced.

well my friends state that there's rebecca dawn weber, who was missing 2 REQUIRED courses, and got in.
also, daniella bugescu, who got in with below 75 average overall, and a 280 OAT

It's interesting that there is no daniella bugescu in the program at UW...

daniela bugescu is there for a fact. she's was on the CAOS exec according to my friends in 2002.

if you dont think so - go to the optom building and ask Iris, Alisa Khan, or Kenneth Tsim. They all know daniela, and they are aware of her poor grades.

Posting a person's names and stats w/o there permission is not very professional. I would advise these names be edited out before more people see.

Well, she's not in the University of Waterloo directory, and therefore she is not a student at UW. The only possiblity is that she graduated more than a year ago or is a student at l'Université de Montréal or one of the american schools.

However, if she did graduate a little while ago then it is possible that maybe she did get in with less than stellar grades because I know a few years ago UW changed many of its pre-req's (added a huge list actually), so the number of applicants decreased significantly and as a result the calibre of the entering class decreased for awhile while other people caught up to the changes.

connorkearns,

I want to say that, after reading through all the posts you have made on SDN, I find your attitude and comments regarding UWaterloo offensive, childish and ill-informed. As a student in a professional program you should be conducting yourself with more decorum and regard for your peers. I worked very hard to get into UW and for you to trash the program here is bullsh*%. I want you to concentrate on doing gonioscopy without WHITE-OUT on your lens and try to forget about not being accepted to Waterloo.
