I'm going to be starting in the fall at WSU's college of pharmacy (I know I'm in the medical section) -- but I'm asking about living in Detroit. What are the safe areas in Detroit?

I have been looking at nearby apartments and lofts and such but I can't tell if the area is safe or not. There were apartments/lofts near Joe Louis arena, but I've heard in the past that it's not the safest area in Detroit. I know that generally the WSU area is considered safe, but I also have a medium-sized dog, and the apartments near WSU that I have looked at either don't allow dogs or only allow small dogs.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I live right by main campus. Generally, the midtown area is very safe. I've walked back from the library at 1 am with the safe walk program they have. WSU police is really quick to calls. Woodbridge is also safe. I don't know much about the downtown area and I'm not sure if WSU police patrol it. Check craigslist for postings, thats how I found my place. Start right away because wait lists are full with more people want to live in this area making it harder to find places. It was honestly a miracle I found my apt. lol. As far as I know some places owned by university rentals do allow dogs.

Hopefully that helped a little bit.

Safest options would be to live in the suburbs and commute, if you could afford it. Farmington Hills, Bloomfield Hills, and Dearborn aren't bad.
I already live in the suburbs, but about 50 minutes away. Farmington and Bloomfield are far away when considering that I have to be on campus five days a week and getting to school during the morning rush.

Ferndale and Royal Oak are reasonable options. You could also look into Grosse Pointe.

I think WSUPD patrols between Mack and Grand, Trumbull (or the Lodge) and 75. Most places within those boundaries should be relatively safe (stay closer to Cass than the Lodge), but I think you will probably have issues finding a place that allows dogs. IIRC, Urbane Apts have several complexes over the metro area and allow pets w/ few restrictions.

Do you have any recommendations about specific apartment buildings? There are so many options! And did you use livemidtown or did you seek it out on your own? What would you recommend?

Livemidtown doesn't update on availability but you can always call the numbers on there that intrest you. Start looking around both online (craigslist, zillow, livemidtown etc.) and actually go into different buildings. I would start now because places get booked quickly. I would also avoid buildings owned by scott because I hear he's an awful landlord.

I live in midtown and it's pretty safe, great area to live, lots of medical students live down here. Downtown is also a good/safe place and not far from the medical campus area. For specific apartment buildings it's probably best to actually do some hunting in the area but in general here are some popular options: In midtown there are several new/newer loft-style apartments, notably "studio one" and "the ellington". There are several other apartment complexes in the area some more expensive and some less. A lot of students live downtown, some good options are "Detroit City apartments", or the newly renovated "broderick tower". Near downtown are "the pavilion" and "lafayette towers".

Sorry to bring an old thread back up. I will be starting a residency at Detroit Medical Center (Detroit Heart Hospital) in July.

I'm looking into apartments, and really like the location of some apartments, outlined by the borders of Davenport Street, Cass Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. It is only a 10 minute walk to DMC. But I called Wayne State police, and they advise against living there and is leary of the daily walk to work if I decide to live there. For those that know the area, would you say a daily walk to work at around 5am and coming back around 6 - 9pm between these two locations are safe.

Is it that bad? anybody have any experience. How can something so close to Wayne State be so dangerous? The apartments that I want to rent (Cass Plaza) do not have much review, but an apartment (Milner Arms) has decent review and are literally 1 minute walk from the apartments I am interested in. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
