Yo! I’m so grateful to be in this situation and can’t thank you enough for your guidance.

Wayne

Pros
  • Enjoyed my interview and clicked well with all the faculty and students that I met
  • Home residency programs (correct me if I’m wrong)
  • Higher rank
  • Lots of research
  • Hospitals in close proximity
  • Lots of opportunities to work with underserved populations
Cons
  • detroit is not the most desirable location and location is important for myself and spouse
  • Lost contract with DMC ( not sure about this)
  • Tuition is about $10000 greater than Rosalind

Rosalind

Pros
  • Would live in Chicago city the entire four years instead of living in North Chicago for the first two (love the city and there are plenty of opportunities for my spouse)
  • Seriously, I love Chicago
  • Tons of opportunities for clinical exposure in the City with all of their affiliates
  • New research facility
  • Nbme exams
  • Really enjoyed my interview day
  • Great match list with plenty matching in CA and in competitive specialties
  • Slightly cheaper

Cons
  • Limited research but I heard they can connect their students with opportunities
  • Would sort of suck commuting to school for the first two years
  • No home residency program
  • Hospitals are not close to the school
  • Recent change with curriculum
Shared: Both are pass/fail, both match well, both I think do not have mandatory attendance

  • Summary: Ultimately I want to be able to match in the specialty of my choosing (most likely competitive), so whatever school will help me to accomplish that the best will win me over. However location is important as I want my spouse to be as happy as possible throughout this journey. Also, I would like to head back to Cali for residency.
Thanks again!

Wayne has nbme exams. even without dmc Wayne has Ford and other clinical sites. Although they did sign a contract with dmc going forward .

Rosalind lacks the research and affiliated residency programs associated with it to give you a leg up. Between the two I would choose wayne. Even though wayne's administration is a pita. The research connections and residency connections are what is needed to land a competitive residency.

Rosalind also has NBME exams now (this will be there 2nd year IIRC). With a 40k cost difference and happiness of significant other, I think it's a very close call. I'm biased, and will be attending Rosalind Franklin in the Fall (for what it is worth, i will also be commuting from the city the first 2 years because of my wife's job and its proximity to where we currently live

FWIW I had a similar situation between a higher ranked school in a less desirable location and a solid MD in a more fun area. Chose the higher ranked school in the end (though in my case it was also cheaper so that made it easier).

Your case is more of a wash because you have pros and cons for both. Do you think you can match significantly better from Wayne? If yes, then Wayne is the school you should go to. Also keep in mind the cheaper cost of living in Detroit may slightly offset the tuition difference

Edit: is it at all possible for you and your spouse to gain Michigan residency while you’re in school? Could be something to look into.

OPs original post already stated that Rosalind used NBME.

The COA for rosalind per for the first year is 81k~. The COA for wayne for the first year is 83k. You dont have to take out all of the money if you can live cheaper.
The total COA difference is 20~k. Which in the grand scheme of things is a rounding error.

Im not saying this is the best option for everyone, i am saying for those who are willing to move there are objectively more opportunities at Wayne to build a strong residency application compared to Rosalind.

Wayne has 75~million in research funding vs Rosalind's 10~million
Wayne has residency programs in almost every competitive field vs Rosalind's none.

Is it possible to match a competitive speciality at Rosalind, Yes absolutely. Is it going to be more work to organize outside research etc, get letters from residency directors not affiliated? Absolutely.

Congrats! Will you be taking the train to school?

Yeah, I am leaning toward Wayne, thanks for your input. Unfortunately I will not be able to qualify for instate tuition.

The difference in funds and home residency programs is the deciding factor for me. Thanks again.

Last comment: it is a LONG train ride from Chicago to Rosalind Franklin. I had to do it for a summer research program there, personally couldn’t imagine doing that for 4 years.

True. It would only be for the first two years though. But it’s over an hour each way, sounds horrible.

Between getting to the Metra train, riding it over an hour, and then taking the shuttle, it’s closer to 2 hours 😵
Yeah, thats rough. It would be pretty hard to live a balanced life with a commute like that. I’m sure balance is hard enough in medical school even without a commute. Thanks for all your help!
