hey everyone,
as the title says, I'm deciding between wayne and western michigan med school while western has given me a full tuiton scholarship for all 4 years. I am pretty sure I want to do something in surgery, Ophthalmology, and Orthopedics to name a couple I am interested in.
Pros of Wayne:
-closer to family (45 min away)
-established school, great rotation spots
-would love to work in an underserved area like detroit
-would be easier to get a residency spot I want
cons:
-tuiton 40k a year
-huge class size(300)
-cost of living more expensive in detroit
-break schedule is small (one week in september, december, and june)
Pros of western:
FREE tuiton. no debt. not a dime paid
small class size (80)
new facilities, state of the art equipment
-nice break schedule (2 weeks break after each block)
cons:
farther away from family(2.5 hours)
younger school, less established
may make finding comp specialty harder
I know this may seem like a no brainer to some of you, but I was highly committed to wayne until I got that scholarship email. Overall I would love to attend wayne, but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra 160k.
