hey everyone,

as the title says, I'm deciding between wayne and western michigan med school while western has given me a full tuiton scholarship for all 4 years. I am pretty sure I want to do something in surgery, Ophthalmology, and Orthopedics to name a couple I am interested in.

Pros of Wayne:
-closer to family (45 min away)
-established school, great rotation spots
-would love to work in an underserved area like detroit
-would be easier to get a residency spot I want

cons:
-tuiton 40k a year
-huge class size(300)
-cost of living more expensive in detroit
-break schedule is small (one week in september, december, and june)

Pros of western:
FREE tuiton. no debt. not a dime paid
small class size (80)
new facilities, state of the art equipment
-nice break schedule (2 weeks break after each block)

cons:
farther away from family(2.5 hours)
younger school, less established
may make finding comp specialty harder

I know this may seem like a no brainer to some of you, but I was highly committed to wayne until I got that scholarship email. Overall I would love to attend wayne, but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra 160k.

Wayne if interested in those specialties as 160k isn’t that much and they have home residency programs in the field

Wayne state will give you edge for specialities you are targeting … though do not know much about western Michigan it seems less exposure with smaller setup.
