SO if some of you been doing alright in class (passing around the avg) but found a way to step it up-not involved actually working harder, but maybe smarter perhaps-what did you do? and don't hold back the best suggestions the best one wins lunch with an assistant to the asistant general manager of the scranton branch of dunder mifflin.

Stop going to lecture=happier more successful medical student

I'm starting to agree with this more and more as well

p.s. you can't get diseases from birds

Screw the lecture, screw it.

If you dont go to class how do you do well

Find a really good, dedicated study partner who is on the same "wavelength" as you when it comes to learning styles (and academic ability). Shoot the material back and forth at each other, quiz each other, make up mnemonics and dances and whatever helps you learn the most. You'll stay current on the material because you won't want to feel like an slacker jerk at your next study session, and you'll actually study when you need to because it'll be an appointment.

Works for me, anyway.

p.s. I still go to class, I find that (with most lecturers, anyway) I actually do learn in class. Not everyone will, though; a friend of mine can't concentrate in class and studies better at home. Me, I'm finding that learning in class and with my study partner works, but being at home just leads to cat-petting and net-surfing and TV-watching (and very occasionally, even housework), and I get no studying done. I need structure, I guess.

In order to offer you good advice, we need to know where you think your weakness is. Is it that you study 24hrs a day and still aren't remembering everything? Or perhaps you find that you don't have the motivation to study, so you sit down and don't get anything accomplished? Or maybe you are so busy doing other things in your life that you are looking for a way to create study time?

There is different advice for each of these situations, so if you are more specific to your situation, hopefully we can tailor our advice to it more directly.

appreciate all the responses- I am doing fine, I just feel I could do better-the issue is that I am a big believer in understanding stuff-which almost works against me because the time I spend doing that = time I am not memorizing more stuff.

As for the lecture skipping, I am going to try it, albeit hesitantly b/c going to lecture has given me a point or two on just that random factoid question.

again thanks for the advice

I know the not going to lecture works out for some, but I feel the same way about random facts that kind of pop up in lectures. Every test I take I am saved on a couple of questions that I just happened to hear in lecture. You tend to hear the professors' pet peeves in class, and those things end up on the test. But, maybe being a happy lecture-free student makes up for that.

I wouldn't reccommend abolishing lecture completely in a sense, that you shouldn't watch em if you have streaming media, or listen to them if your school has audio. B/c it will make your job a lot easier when you study, b/c they do point stuff out, and so you know what you need to focus on, or they throw a random factoid. So don't quit lectures altogether and just study at home, that might improve your grades slightly due to having more time. But you will also have to study everything, b/c you don't know what is emphasized in the lecture. So yea don't go to lecture, but listen to them at home.

I guess I'm a trusting person, but I rely on notegroups and the professor's powerpoints instead of listening to the audio recording of the lecture. On average, the notegroups are good enough to pick up what the professor emphasizes. Again, you miss some stuff, but I'd probably miss it in class, too.

I second everyone who has said don't go to class. If you have the notes that are going to be lectured on, it is way better to just skip lectures. I didn't go to a single biochem class for this past exam block, and honored the test easy. Same goes with all my other classes. THe time you spend in lecture is horribly inefficient, even if you do feel that you are getting something out of it, I gaurantee you could get more out of that time if you sit down and just study instead.

Even though I'm not the OP, I would like some advice along these lines. I find that I study a ton and don't remember anything. Now, I'm getting frustrated and losing the motivation to study - where I was extremely motivated before.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

increasing ranking without working harder, hummmm....

it's easy, just find out who's doing better than you and then kill them

Hey Izabelle,

Try taking practice quizzes and explaining topics/concepts to the people you study with. It helps you retain info better, I think, when you find ways to apply it like this.:luck:

If this is what works for you then it works...but I've really never understood audio lectures...What's the benefit of not going to class, if you're still putting in the time listening to a person talk for the same amount of time...Other than maybe being able to choose when you listen to it, I don't see the great benefit.

Lots of people say going to class is a waste of time. I dunno, that may or may not be true, I can't decide. I'm a class person, and just haven't been able to give it up because it makes me feel like I'm in school, at least. But one thing that seems like a worse waste of time to me than going to class is listening to your computer talk to you for the same amount of time.

Maybe I am just a visual person...

As I see it, there are two main benefits:
1). You can listen to lectures at 2x speed, which cuts down the time spent "in lecture" greatly.

2). When a lecturer whizzes through a difficult concept, or is making important comments that aren't explicitly in the notes you can pause the recording and spend time taking down notes or relistening to difficult sections. Unless you're that dude from Quantum Leap or Marty McFly, this is pretty difficult to do when sitting in the lecture hall.

thank you for all the replies, I am glad we could hug it out b!tches

Test scores seem to pretty much be a function of time spent studying. The more time I spend, the more likely I am to have seen and rememberd some inane detail that makes the difference. Of course the law of limiting returns applies also. It takes a lot more hours of studying to go from a 90 to 94 than from 70 to 85.

I am not going to spend any more time studying, iam going to narrow my focus and spend the same amount and see what I get, also am going to skip a lectureor two-I consider this equal time since I would ave been in class anyways-I will let you know how it goes-once more thanks for all of the helpful advice playas

Yeah, I had several of these people in undergrad, and none of them in med school. 😡 I hope I can find someone like that again.

And I go to lecture, because I'd still be asleep otherwise, or surfing the Internet (even more than I am already). It wakes me up and exposes me to the material at a time when I'd be asleep otherwise.
