Oh my god. I checked Facebook and my friend left me a message saying she got a call from WCVM saying she got in, so I checked my phone, and there's a message from the guy saying he has a question for me and some information. She says that's what his message said to her too.

I just called back, but he's out of his office. My hands are shaking.

Edit: I'm in! They're calling Alberta residents this year because Calgary tends to call. All letters are going out for everyone on Monday. Good luck!

It's been a while since I've checked the forum and I was excited to see these postings. I had my interview a couple of weeks ago and I can't decide how it went. I thought it went really well right afterward but now I keep on thinking of all the things I should have said.
By the way Congrats Braki! Do you know if they were sending out letters for all provinces on Monday?

Yes, WCVM is sending every letter on Monday, acceptances, alternates, rejections, all of it, every province.

I'm choosing WCVM for sure. It'd be kind of nice to go to UCVM because I live in Calgary, but UCVM's elective areas are horses, production animals, public health, and research. They don't have a small animal focus, whereas WCVM offers a lot more options in that area. As someone who really wants to do small animals, it's a much better program for me. In addition, you have to spend about half of your 4th year at UCVM travelling around the province, which isn't as feasible for me since I'm kinda settled (with a boyfriend and two cats, all of whom are coming with me).

Also, it's kind of nice to move out from home. 🙂

Man, Im nervous now. Letters out today? So... basically checking the mail every day. Dont know how Im going to sleep this week.... anyone know how long it takes Canada Post to get mail to southern BC from Saskatoon? haha

Finding out doesn't help your sleep! I haven't been able to sleep well since I heard the news from WCVM. I guess I've just been too excited or something, but I used to sleep like a baby before I got in. Not that I'm complaining. 😛

I think they have too many students to call everyone, but it would be nice if they were able to. Hearing it before the letters even get sent out relieves a lot of stress.

Hahaha Braki, ya, I can see your point. I would be very excited too. Will see... Today I have butterflies in my stomach... hope I get the letter today because if not, Im gone all weekend and wont be able to check the mail until Sunday late. :S No phone calls for us is understandable like you said... Im just impatient I suppose and complaining helps... or wait, does it? haha 😛

Cant wait to hear what the results are everyone!!!! Post asap when you find out the good news!!!! 😀

I got my letter, but not the official one. 🙁

They still hadn't received my transcript yet when they were writing these I guess, so I have a provisional acceptance letter. They are holding my official letter hostage until they receive my transcript.

P.S. I can't wait for you guys to get your letters! I hope for the best!

When I volunteered at a vet clinic a few years ago, this vet who had recently graduated from WCVM said that you had to buy a microscope. Is that still true?

yes my colleague who's going into 4th year told me we will need microscopes. be prepared to spend thousands of dollars on top of textbooks in first year. and students have to pay for their own rabies vaccinations too

Yes, you will probably have to buy a microscope. A computer version of all the slides for histology was just implemented this past year, but I think it's still in the trial period and they still want everyone to have their own microscopes. The microscope cost was ~$1000. However, many graduating students offer their microscopes for sale for ~$500-800, and I honestly don't think there's a huge difference.

As mentioned, you do need to also pay for your own rabies vaccination, however the cost is reimbursed through the student health plan offered at UofS.

While there are a lot of textbooks, I found a lot of them were unnecessary. Realistically, there's not enough time to read through textbooks for every course. Personally, I only bought three textbooks for first year and I felt it was more than sufficient.

I had a dream last night that we had started vet school! You were there, Amy! It was us, and some other people (I guess their names were stuck in my mind from the FB group), and we were in this small room waiting for everyone else. Our embryology prof was sitting with us while we waited for class to start. He was in his mid-30s, kinda cute, and was talking to us about vet school life.

Anyway, I woke up and I was so excited! Classes start in almost exactly 2 months!
