I had posted this in the general residency forum, but did not get many responses. So I hope more can help me over here. Thanks

Hi guys and gals, I was wondering if anyone is planning to or recently has gotton married during their internship/residency. I am currently planning on marrying my girlfriend of five years during this time period. Do you feel that you have/had enough time to plan a wedding and get time off for the event plus honeymoon? I have no problem letting my girlfriend take charge with planning but I would still like to play a huge role in this great occassion. I am afraid that the constraints of a residency will prevent me from enjoying the process. I am also afraid that I would not be able to get the proper time off. Any stories and advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

i got married at the end of my intern year. in our program we know our vacation blocks way in advance, so we just made sure our date coincided with a vacation date...since my vacation is 2 weeks, we set the date halfway during the vacation -- that left a few days before the wedding to get the last minute details taken care of, and a few days after the wedding for a short honeymoon.

i was still fairly involved with the planning - we took advantages of weekends off to go look at the various spaces and meet with florists and photographers...a lot of those guys also have evening hours to accomodate say a late clinic day. we also took advantage of a lot of online vendors. for example here in the ny area, there's a great French wedding cake baker -- and you set up your appointments and order request online and just go in person to taste your fillings.

one of my interns this year also got married..his wife did do most of the planning, but he was able to get the time off.

it's a totally doable thing during internship/residency. involve your "classmates" sometimes they will be willing to make switches if necessary.

I'm just a second year, but I'm getting married in June, but that's in between Step 1 and the start of clerkships. We're not having a traditional wedding, VERY simple, so my fiance hasn't had to give a lot of input yet. But what I'm doing to fit it all in and not be stressed when I need to study is I've set things up so I can do all the real planning over spring break. My parents are being extremely helpful, which is good, since we're having it at their house. Anyway, because I didn't want to ruch Step 1, I don't have time for a honeymoon after the wedding. We're spending the night at a bed and breakfast, then we plan to do a honeymoon when we have time and money. I think that will be much more enjoyable.
