Wegmens and free atorvastatin

I guess it's similar to Publix supplying free antibiotics.

Chains can do what they want, but honestly free meds and transfer coupons annoy me. It breeds a certain kind of patient that transfers all around to get free stuff and typically results in more work for pharmacy staff.

Great, I can see it now.
My average customer's logic: "X chain gives this away for free. They wouldn't give it away if they weren't making money. Therefore all drugs are free and your chain is ripping me off. HURRR DURR."

I don't know this chain. They are not in my area, but I just don't know about this

Wegmans is a supermarket chain from central NY i believe. Loved shopping there when i lived in western NY (Buffalo). Better than publix imho.

They're a grocery chain based out of Rochester NY. They used to do the free abx, but stopped it when they started doing this. Probably started this around October or so, but I don't exactly recall.

They could probably operate the pharmacy as a loss leader since their grocery dept and precooked meals are so successful, so the little bit of cost for the atorvastatin is insignificant. The pharmacy is definitely not a loss leader for them overall though, to my knowledge all of their stores fill 500+ and some are even 1000+. They have definitely taken a lot of scripts from the other chains with this promo.

Do you think they're targeting statin users because of their assumed eating habits?

Statin users usually have other medical conditions (diabetes, htn, etc). It's obviously all about the companion scripts and getting people in the stores.
