Well, July 1st is here: a new batch of interns...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm terrified... and I start in the neonatal ICU, so I don't want to kill a baby. I also don't have a white coat to carry all the reference materials I need; the coats won't be in for the interns until about September. =(

Can't you just wear a plain one without embroidery?

That involves buying one, which I'll probably do on Friday when I'm post call. We found out today that we won't get them until September.

Edit: It's still annoying that we don't have our coats, and if we do want one, we have to go buy one. I've got 2 coming later.

I'm pretty sure that there's a no white coat policy in the NICU....at least that's been the case in the two NICU's I've been in. No white coats, no watches, no engagement rings...all good places for germs!!!

If that's true, it still doesn't do me any good for my ward month in August.

... you can see the fear watching the Chief Resident lay down the law. 😀

Good luck to everybody starting their PGY...

Thanks! I like many others am preparing for the wards by throwing up a little blood. Sadly it's not as relaxing as I would have hoped. 😉

What about orientation?

If I remember correctly, we didnt' start wards July 1st, we had a couple of days of orientation first.

Or maybe not. I don't remember.

you guys actually started july 1? man my orientation was the 15th and I started the 23rd! and the first week of wards has been busy. very very busy.

How was the first day (whether it was as an intern or now a "senior" resident) for everyone? You've survived!

I arrived to 5 patients, discharged 1, and now only have 4 going into my call today with 1 scheduled premie delivery. It wasn't as bad as I thought, and now I know how to do discharges after getting thrown into it really fast.

Rest assured, if your place is like my place, believe me, the nurses won't let a new intern near enough to one of their babies that you would have to worry about killing it. They wouldn't let us hardly touch them. Very protective, usually with the staff neonatologist's blessing.

Listen to the nurses in NICU, they will help you a lot.

Hey Ashers, I started in the NICU too... about a week ago. I thought the first couple of days were really rough (what the h*** is GIR??) but even after a short amount of time you'll at least know what everybody else is talking about!

I started on June 24. So far, so good. I'm slightly concerned because I start out with several easy months (ophtho, rads, psych ER) --- by the time I hit the harder/rigorous rotations, more will be expected of me. I kind of wish my schedule had been top-heavy.

I hear ya UCLAstudent. I'm in the same boat. The other interns envy me for having an easy schedule. I'm going to be so behind by the time I get on the floors.
