Male
B.S. Biology Cal Poly Pomona
Combined GPA 3.78ish
MCAT 29 and something
BOTTOM THIRD IN CLASS RANK...My class was full of gunners
Above average on Boards (including USMLE 1)
70th percentile on Anesthesiology In-Service Board Exam
Accepted at COMP.. rejected everywhere else(not even another interview)

I was disappointed at the time but I realize that it was one of the best things that could have happened to me. COMP is a solid program if you're willing to do a little more work and go to good teaching rotations. ie surgery at arrowhead, SICU at arrowhead, Medicine at Maricopa Med. Center.

I'm now a Third year resident in anesthesia at the Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. There is also a second year anesthesia resident here from COMP and a CT surgery fellow I met the other day.
Good Luck to ALL!!!

I think COMP is doing early interviews because they screwed up last year, they had a hard time filling classes from what i hear. I read that (search other post) they were still interviewing in LATE April or May for entering 2004

I think the late interviews - and this year's early interview prior to secondaries, is because of COMP's Northwest Track program they started for this year's entering class. The class size has increased from 180 to ~215 to accomodate people from the Pacific Northwest. I think the majority of the late interviews last year and early ones this year involve those people.

Also, I hear that they are now going to offer interviews after screening the primary based on stats, and wait for the secondary - kind of like how NYCOM does it. *shrug*

Hihi!

The average stats for COMP (last I checked) are about a 3.38 GPA, and 3.28 Science GPA. The average MCAT is close to 25. To the op - I wouldn't worry about your stats at all. My friend is going there this fall, and had a 3.3 GPA and 3.1 Science GPA (also a UC student). He said the admissions people told him interviews start at 3.0 and above (assuming a reasonable MCAT). Does this help any?

i went to ucla too; i think as long as you know why you want to be a DO and your extra cirrics are solid you should be fine

go bruins!

If you go to their website, the avg accepted gpa is a 3.4 and average accepted MCAT is a 9 on each section, which makes it a 27 total. They do like UC students a lot. 😀

Here is more information on accepted students: http://www.westernu.edu/admissions/do_profile.xml

Thanks for all the infos you guys, makes me feel a lot better! =) Anyone know anything on TUCOM? I heard their class sizes are a lot smaller.

i had similar stats (except for the UC creds) and got accepted to both COMP and TUCOM. i wouldn't worry too much if i were you.

FeelGood -

Do you mind delving into the specifics here a bit more. Does it have anything to do with what Alex said here in 2001?

Woah, I'm at the end of my first year here and I have some advice and warnings for all you prospective students out there.
Advice: If you get in ANYWHERE else go there.
Warnings: The faculty and staff at this school are apathetic and self-centered. They really enjoy to see people fail and go out of their way to hinder your education (not all of them, but almost half of them).
Prejudice and lying among some of the new heads of Departments is common and supported by the University.
Of course if you're really good at kissing ass and never need any help you'll make it through just fine.
I've been lied to many times at this school. Watch out. When I was applying to med-school I thought all posters on this board just supported their individual schools. I never read much about COMP, now I know why. I think people are more likely to say good things about their schools. I wish I never came to this school. I repeat what so many of my class mates often say, "I hate this school."
I came because of location. Shoulda gone to NYCOM.
If you want to be supported, If you want your ideas listened to, If you want your education facilitated, If you want to feel like you matter at the school you attend,... Don't go to COMP !!!

I absolutely don't mind rolling up my sleeves and doing 'a little more work.' In fact, I actually acknowledge that this will play a major role in my success at COMP, but can you tell me what exactly does 'a little more work' entail. I'll start with what I know -- setting up rotations, etc., but what else?

Anything else that you might be able to single out? I got my eyes on the prize -- EM or Ortho. Also AOA or AMA residencies for me, I don't think I'll care either way as long as I stay in sunny SoCal.

Big thanks in advance,

JMC
