Hey all,
I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this but I’m having an existential crisis after I received my final post II R from my state school yesterday. My only option now it to attend Western Michigan and I’m feeling pretty defeated as all of my friends have been getting into much higher ranked schools. I’m interested in ENT and am worried I won’t be able to match because western Michigan is newer and doesn’t have the robust resources of a top school. Should I not hit PTE and try my luck again next cycle?? I’m so lost, any help or input is much appreciated.

Getting into any medical school is a major accomplishment, at the end of the day both you and your friends will be doctors, thats worth celebrating! Yeah, you may have to work harder to find opportunities + prove yourself for something like ENT, but you could either be in a same or worse situation next year and possibly not get in anywhere, or be an M1. Does Western Michigan have a second look and have you gone? Have you looked at their match list? Talked to current students? I would get as much info as possible before judging based off of how new the school is.

I have also heard its a major red flag to admins to get accepted somewhere and choose to reapply. It brings into question if you *really* want to be a doctor or just want the prestige + why you applied to a school you didn't actually want to go to. I've heard horror stories of someone who did reapply after an acceptance and they had to reapply multiple cycles after, trying to get in anywhere at all. Have you made major changes to your app that would make you think something would be different next time?

I would personally 100% take the acceptance and attend. It's not worth the gamble and if you are concerned about your friends judgment/not getting into as highly ranked of a school, I would also say that may be more internal insecurity projecting on others. Your friends should not be judging you negatively for attending a less prestigious school, and if they are, they are sucky friends! You are gonna be a doctor!! That is AWESOME.

Western Michigan has some amazing residency matches and is a fully accredited school where students feel supported.
Don’t pass it by!

Thanks for the reply @wysdoc. I’m very green to all things medical school. What makes a good residency match? I was looking at it and I’m not sure how to interpret what is good and not?
You look at where people go (all over, see if some stay local but not all stay at local or small residencies)
You look at the specialty or area you might be interested in and see if people from the school have been able to get those residencies
Getting a residency you want is far in the future and first things first, do your best to keep up with the work at your med school

Do not worry too deeply about the match list. Especially since you have an acceptance already. It will be hard to explain that you passed it up your next cycle. Go to the school and do everything in your power to match. Ultimately it is up to you.
