Western or UTK?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Don't know anything about Western, but I love UTK! Great school, professors, students, town, activities, clubs, facilities...I could go on about it. It's a great fit for me. If you have any specific questions, just ask and I'd be happy to answer as much as I can.🙂

I'm a bit biased because I'm at TN now but when I was applying I was also between Western and TN. A lot will depend on your learning style. If you feel like you can be very self-motivated to learn on your own and learn by doing cases, then Western may work well for you but if you prefer the standard type of learning then TN may be a better place for you. I liked the idea of the way that Western does their teaching but I was unsure if it would work well for me and TN has a little of it in their curriculum (usually 1 week each semester for the first 3 years).
I love UTK and they have one of the top exotics programs which is what I wanted to go to school for. I think it was a great fit for me and the area is nice (I have heard people say that the immediate area around Western is not great... I didn't see enough of it while I was out there to know). I think the only thing that I really don't like about Knoxville is how terrible people are at driving.

There is a pathology resident at UTK who went to Western with me. She would be someone to look up to give you opinion from someone who has been at both places.

Thanks Chris! I will have to figure out how to look her up? But..no plug for Western from you? 🙂 I think I was kinda hoping for one ha. 🙂

Well I know absolutely nothing about UTK so I cannot compare the 2. I went to Western because I wanted to try something different than traditional lectures, wanted hands on from the start and loved the 2 full clinical years.

Southern California and Knoxville Tennessee are 2 completely different worlds. Which one will you be happy in? For me, I was in SoCal all of my life, went to CPP for undergrad and knew I was happy in the Pomona area. I also know that I would be a bit culture shocked if I went to a school in the south. Does that mean I would not like it? I do not know.

The curriculums are completely different. Which will you be happier in? I tend to fall asleep in lectures so could not see myself in lectures all day. That is NOT to say that style of program is bad...just not for me.

The last thing to consider (if it is a consideration for you) is cost.

I am not the cheerleader type so hope this helps 🙂
