So I saw on another thread that several people have been accepted to Western with 2 pre-reqs to complete still, but I was wondering how strict they were with the date you finish them by. Their website says that all required courses must be completed by June 30th of the year of matriculation, which would pretty much rule out finishing anything the summer before starting vet school. I just started thinking about applying there in the fall, but I'm worried about being able to squeeze in the oddballs like Public Speaking and Psychology or Sociology during the normal school year. If anyone has experience with this, any feedback would be appreciated!

I'm on the waitlist, but I also had some outstanding prereqs to finish. My last one is ending June 27 because it is an online class that started at a random date during the semester. Check with the colleges you want to take your prereqs at and see if they have the option of choosing the start date for your class to make sure it ends by the deadline. That might be more of just an online class thing though. I would suggest just calling our advisor or Karen Hutton-Lopez herself and find out what is the latest they will accept a class ending. I'd have your classes picked out already so you can give them the date that they end and see what they say. You also may want to find out if some of the classes you've already taken will count for some of your outstanding prereqs.

I'm pretty sure that deadline is lenient. As long as you come to orientation with everything ready to go you should be ok. I have a friend who will still be taking classes this year past the June 30th deadline and she is going to Western. Hope that helps!

I am just finishing my first year at Western and when I got accepted I had one outstanding pre-req that I ended up finishing the first day of classes. I told them the reason and they were ok with it. I think they told me it just had to be done prior to classes starting.

I was just on Westerns pre req page last night. I saw Psychology and Speech as pre reqs for entering in F10. Did they just add those?! They were on my list but I don't think I can squeeze Psych in! Already taking Speech over the winter session.
I actually really started to like the school just through the site alone. Can't really put my finger on why though.

Cool! Thanks for the info, guys... That really puts my mind somewhat at ease. I think the first summer session at my school ends sometime during the first week of July, so I will check with them to see if that would work.

I know they had the public speaking stuff before, but I don't remember the sociology/psychology requirement at all so it could be new. Someone correct me if I'm wrong! I liked their website too. I felt like it had a lot more information than some schools have for their programs... The course equivalency database on their page is amazing!

For finishing pre-req stuff....can you take an online class or two over the summer, then squeeze one in the fall, and then one or two in the spring.... and finally one or two next summer? Thats what I did when I was applying. Taking online classes are a little bit of a pain in the butt (depending on where you take it) but they do allow you for the most part to work at your own pace.

I'm already taking some other things over the summer, including Physics II and Animal Nutrition! 😳 I'm thinking I can definitely squeeze one in in the fall, but it's not really possible to take the speech stuff online... Haha. Although, I just saw that they accept "Small Group Communication" instead of Public Speaking and I know my school offers it online so I will have to check if they will go for that. Luckily, I don't mind online classes at all. I may be able to make it work before next spring is over, but I just wanted to check on other people's experiences with finishing things the summer before just in case! 😉

Hey guys! I agree, I think Western is pretty fabulous too...I chose it over 2 other vet schools I was accepted to. Anyhoo, just wanted to mention that the course eq database is great! But, if you have a class that may meet the requirement but isn't on there, give them a call and see if you can make it count anyway. My microbio course wasn't on there and I called and asked if it would be ok. I think I may have sent them a syllabus and then they said no prob! Never hurts to ask 🙂 . Good luck!!

I could be completely mistaken, but I believe that the date of June 30th is new for the 2009 application cycle. I believe when I applied in the fall they were willing to give you the summer to complete the pre-reqs. When I saw the date of June 30th come up recently (along with the new pre-reqs for the 2009 application cycle) my assumption was that they didn't want so many people waiting to complete the coursework until the summer. Like I said...I could be completely off-base, but it might be a good thing to call/email and ask about.

May I ask another kind of related question this thread? Sorry if I am hijacking... It just came to mind as I was reading this.

I am a non-trad student, taking the prereqs, but hoping to get them done as quickly as possible. I live in Cali, so am very interested in Western.

I am wondering how strict they are about Public Speaking being done as a course? I served as one of those campus guides in college, and having gone to a large university that really valued its reputation, it was a very serious position. I was accepted as one of like fifteen people out of hundreds, and we had to complete weekly public speaking type of sessions. But it was not a course, there was no grade (in fact, I was paid). I have to say I would love to not have to take a speaking course. I imagine that they desire a course like this to ensure that people are able to speak in groups (considering the PBL), so is it possible to prove this ability through other experiences?
