Hello everyone,

I was visiting Western university's pharmacy campus yesterday and I did not get a good impression of the school. It is located in a bad area, does not have a food court, they are still going through a lot of adjustments (changing their curriculum... etc) and there is only one building the students stay in.

Does anyone else feel this way or me? I would like to get some input from students attending Western on how they like it there or get other opinions from other future applicants.

Also, where would be an ideal place to live in order to go there for school? (Cuz I do NOT want to live anywhere around the campus.

Well, if there is no food court, then I don't even consider it! 😉

Hi, I have also visited the campus recently and I do not see how it is located in a bad area since there was a senior center there so I thought maybe it would be a quiet neighborhood. I am considering applying there in a couple of years so maybe you can explain what wasn't all that great about the school. Maybe I missed something that you noticed. 🙂

if you guys are from cali, where did you take biochem classes for western? a year of biochem sucks. i took 153a at ucla and 153L, but i still have to take 153b and 153c. i was thinking of taking chem31 at smc, but i think it will be really full.

Hey iamhungry,
I am exactly where u are as far as biochem (i have taken 153A and 153L at UCLA) and the school told me that if I took a molecular biology class (such as LS3 or an upper division molecular biology class) then I only need to take 153C in order to fulfill the biochemistry requirement.

Hey bananaface,
What I mean by "bad area" is that there are trains passing by every few minutes which means that if you were to get an apartment close by, the noise might bother u. Also, the school does not have an area for students to buy lunch. There was simply a room where students had access to a microwave to warm their food and vending machines for snacks and drinks. When I asked the tour guide what my options were as far as food/restaurants goes, she told me that there is a subway closeby and that was really it. I go to UCLA so I am used to having a place like westwood where I can study, eat, and socialize with many places to choose from. The idea of being placed in one building everyday, which is the idea that I got, would drive me crazy. On my visit to the campus, I did not see a senior center... Is it close to campus?
Overall, I guess it doesn't really matter where u go, as long as u get to where u want to be (but it would be nice to have a good experience throughout pharmacy school).

rxgirl-are you really going to take 153c at ucla? biochem153a and l was enough for me. i dont know if i can handle 153c. a lot of community colleges around me dont offer a biochem equivalent.

hey there.. i took my biochem at uCr... all i had to take was biochem 100... and that was pretty much it.

iamhungry,
153c at UCLA was not so bad, especially if you take it with Gober. With regards to Western, I had no problem with their campus. It is for sure no Westwood, but having a food court should not be anyone;s priority when choosing pharm school. On the other hand, I would be worried about changing curriculum. For me, I knew I wanted to stay in LA and I would have probably gone to Western if I was not accepted to SC. I have several friends at Western, and noone has complained to me about the food court 🙂

Well personally I really enjoy biochem so I would not mind taking it if I had to. U just gotta do what u gotta do sometimes...

i just realized i have to take phy sci again! i took physci 3 at ucla, but it had no lab portion. ugh. i guess i'll take it at gcc. stupid prereqs.

hi!!! I am in ur guys exact predicament. I also took 153A and L at UCLA. So are you SURE that if we took ls 3 or another UD MCDB course, we ONLY need 153C??? THanks for the info!!!

berrytart-that's the word on the street. for those of you taking 153c, when do you plan on taking it? i'm trying to see if they have it at uclaextensions but i dont think its offered there.

153C is not offered at extension. But if you are not a ucla student and you want to take it, then u can sign up for it through ucla extension (u basically have to get a signature from the biochem dept located in young hall and pay the extension fee). One other option is to take it at a community college (if it is offered and the class is not full).

U can always call Western U at 909-469-5335 and make sure about the 153C pre-req

good luck!
