Alright I have been searching SDN and Western's website, with no success. So I was wondering if anyone could answer some of these questions...

1. Early patient contact? Simulated patients, volunteer clinics, etc.?
2. What is this preceptor thing?
3. From what I read the 1st year cur. is only really lec./lab based, am I wrong?
4. What are the lecture and lab class size (professor:student ratio)?
5. Are there volunteer options also maybe abroad volunteer options?
6. If you are a current student or alum what did you think?

Ok thanks in advance. I was just getting frustrated searching with no success and western's website is pretty slow and lacking information.

Lots of opportunities to get involved from what I've researched. The school has over 50 clubs/organizations for you to become involved in as well as some early clinical opportunities through the Montclair Clinic and PCHAT (both which offer free healthcare to disadvantaged patients) where 1st and 2nd year students may take medical histories and perform physicals. Definitely something to consider, hope this helps 🙂

yeah that helps thanks guys!

There are many opportunities there for volunteer work. You should also consider attrition at the school. I did some research into it and I gathered that about 20 - 30 people drop for whatever reason out of about 210 - 220, usually within the first year. I don't think it's their selection process because they have one of the highest MCAT/GPA stats. Definately ask around - ask 2nd years (specifically how many they started with, and how many they have now) as well as graduates.

If you're interested in early patient contact & volunteering abroad - it'll serve you well. You'll also be well prepared for boards and wards.
