Hi,

I am on Western's alternate list and I received an email today from them regarding tuition increase beginning Fall 2011. Did anyone else on their alternate list got the email?

tuition will be $58,325/year with additional $4,386 for dental instrument lease fees. So its total $62,711. I think including books, room & board and other fees come out to be around $91,000/year.

So an increase of $3,000 at least per year? Dam that sucks. You would think they get paid enough already that they wouldnt need an increase, especially only after the second year of being open. WOW 👎

I don't want to defend the school or anything because if its possible, I want the tuition to be around 20G but new schools need more money than any other schools. Just to give you an idea, a dental chair that WesternU use cost about 20G each. There are over 80 chairs in the clinic. And Western has one of the state of the art clinic with dental CT that no other school in US own one. Hope that helps.

And yes, the rate of my tuition went up around $3G a year from first year.

no other school has a CT scanner? are you joking? good luck trying to convince a patient to fork out the $$$ to get a scan done.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but I believe there are schools that atleast have access to CT scans (don't know if they "own" them) NOVA and UNLV come to mind. lol...never heard of a CT? I personally know of three different private practice GPs that have Cone Beams, and pretty much every ortho I know here in WA have them. Its 2011, people know what CT scans are and have most likely seen them in practice.

I haven't done my research yet (why should i?). I can guarantee you every school /w an ortho program has a CT scan available. Can undergrad dds students refer to use it? Most likely, YES. The cost is $250 at school, whereas a pano is $33. Since most patients coming into the school are low-income based, there's pretty much 0% chance they are going to be getting a CT scan. Is a CT scan even necessary for most patients? NOPE, they are reserved for the most advanced cases.

well.. i feel like this thing is going out of topic here but anyway, I am just here not to defend my school. I am here to let ppl why things cost the way it is. If you can't accept it, thats up to you. Get a better grade, dat, n experience to get into cheaper schools. If you don't like it, why waste the money n apply to Western? I go to Western. I like the school and their teaching method. I know how things work here since I am half way through the curriculum already. Do we need CT??.... its not just for ortho. When you are dealing with some oral pathology, CT comes in handy. I believe someone out there may have the machine. Who care? I am just saying I don't know anyone out there has what Western has. I am not here to argue with any of you. We are all in the same boat and we are all paying some sort of tuition. No one is better than anyone regardless of being D1, D2, D3 or even D0!! I simply don't care. But if you read it and you don't agree with it, move on. Have a life. If you really got offended by what I said, then I don't mind clearing things with you face to face, of course professionally.

We have a CT at UCSF too, but you are right that this machine does alot more then just ortho cases.
