Hi everyone! I am a new member on SDN forums and I want to thank all of you in advance for your help and advice!

I am a third year undergraduate student at UCLA studying biochemistry and I plan on applying in the summer of 2013 to enter med school in the Fall of 2014. I have a good amount of free time and in general a lot of time before I apply. I was wondering what I am missing/lacking in my app right now?

Thanks!

~3.91 GPA, 3.89 science GPA
have not taken MCAT yet (am going to take this summer)

Volunteer Work
~150 hours of clinical volunteering in hospital (clerical work, little bit of observing procedures and talking to nurses/staff) (hoping to have about 300-400 by the time I graduate)
~20-30 hours of tutoring/mentorship (hoping to have ~150-200 by the time I graduate)

Research
Just started research (fall of 3rd year)
~20 hours in a wet lab research, doing basic research. hope to stay in this lab for the rest of the year and hopefully will have a grade/paper + 200 hours to show for it
~20 hours in independent group study on neuroimaging (hoping to shadow/do research with the doctor in charge of this in the future)

Other Extracurriculars
~President of Poker Club

In the next two years I hope to get a lot of shadowing, research, and possibly out-of-country clinical volunteering/public health education.

Try to get into a hospital department that provides for the maximum amount of patient interaction if involvement in clerical work is the major thing you do. A shadowing plan is in the works: that's good.

Tutoring and mentor plans look good. A year of research is the average, so you should be fine there as well.

Yes, you have some leadership. Are you maybe donating half of each pot to an altruistic cause the club votes to give the money to? Think on it.

You haven't mentioned nonmedical community service, ideally which helps the poor.

Don't forget hobbies, sports, and artistic involvement.
