When med schools have clerkships scheduled all afternoon on most days, what does it involve?

Third and fourth year rotations are called clerkships. It always puzzled me why they called them that untill one day it just clicked. What you're there for is basically to learn how to do paperwork - soap notes, h+p's etc. You're there to be a clerk. More meaningful work comes later.
