What are ERAS Application Requirements?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ERAS, as the name implies, is simply a service to transmit all of your relevant documentation to residency programs.

Individual programs may have specific requirements, but in general those would include a personal statement, your medical school transcripts, licensing exam scores, and generally 3 to 4 letters of recommendation.

Moving to the ERAS forum where this question belongs.

Thinking ahead for 2014 match.

What info does ERAS request in its application? (essays, Letters of Recommendations etc.)

Where can I get sample application?

Pretty much AMCAS, but for residency.

Just go to the ERAS website. Plenty of info there.

quick Q:

if you did well on a yr 3 clerkship in the specialty you're interested in, and have a few attendings who would probably write amazing rec letters for you, would you request the letter(s) now? I finished the rotation 6 wks ago. I am in my third rotation, so it was my 2nd rotation.

I realize it's early probably, but the truth is that I just don't feel like I can get a decent letter from a 4th year elective from someone who's only seen my work for 2-4 wks, as opposed to my aforementioned core rotation which was almost 10 wks long. Any thoughts at all? thanks in advance

oh and if your answer is yes, where would I have them send the letter(s) to? the dean's office? or do you guys have the equivalent of portfolio which we used for getting into medical school? I'm a USMD student btw. thanks again

You're right, there's nowhere for the letter to go right now. ERAS isn't open, and it would probably get lost in the meantime at your Student Affairs.

What I did was just let the attendings know I enjoyed the rotation, and asked if they'd be willing to write me a strong letter of rec later.

As for fourth year letters, I got much more one-on-one time with the attendings in my chosen specialty, which offset the brevity of the rotation. However, the other difficulty with letters from fourth year electives is that you want most of your letters in when submitting your application (which starts Sept 15th). That only gives you July and August to find new letter writers.

Good luck.

I would ask now and have it sent you the deans office, I did this and it worked wonderfully!

Definitely ask now. Most said yes but to remind them in June right before application season, but I've heard of others who just banged it out and sent it to the Dean's office for holding. In either case, definitely let them know now before they forget who you are.
