What are good programs that allow basic neuroscience research as a neurologist?

So my question basically is...if you're curerntly in an MD/PhD program and want to practice neurology and also do basic neuroscience research i.e. not clinical or patient care related...where would a good place be to go for residency training and employment?

im interested in basic neuroscience to study memory, cortical function, chemical pathways etc. as opposed to studying clinical cases and so forth.

so 1. is it possible to do both? practice medicine and conduct research?
2. if so, where would a good place be to train as a RESIDENT so that one can get access to good professors and research time as well as adequate residency training

3. and which places are the current hotspots for neuroscience research open to MDs? I know that the salk institute/UCSD, stanford, columbia, rockefeller/cornell, yale, and chicago are all really good basic neuroscience stand alone places...do you know of any places that allow residents to study basic science? or places that afford both opportunities?

thanks!

Your question is a little confused, which is probably because you're asking it very prematurely. If you started an MD/PhD program today, you wouldn't have to decide where to do your residency for 7-8 years. But yes, it is possible to do both basic science research and practice medicine. I don't know anything about doing basic science research during residency, but I don't think it is likely to be fruitful, if it's even possible.

oh? why is that? also, what did you do your PhD in and what are you interested in medicine?

You can do both, but it is more difficult because you're essentially living 2 lives, one in clinic and one in the lab, as opposed to someone who does clinical research who is living more like 1.5 lives.

If you want to get out of clinical medicine entirely after residency, that is also possible, and there are many places where you can do that. However, one of the nice things about having that MD is that you don't have to rely entirely on grants to pay your salary, and your department might be more willing to support your lab through the "lean times" if you are bringing in good money through clinical duties.

Add UCSF and UCLA to the list. 🙂

those two programs...do they allow basic research to be conducted by NEUROLOGISTS? also, can you practice medicine at those places as well?

THATS PRECISELY WHY IM INTERESTED IN THE MD!!!

So it is possible for me to practice medicine and do research? thats great! I want to do both because there is no way in hell I am willing to depend on an PhD alone. Several reasons- I didnt do particularly well in school to get into the better PhD programs...and i didnt do well enough in high school to stay focused on the sciences alone to 1. get into a good research university for UG and 2. to keep abreast and advanced in the sciences/mathematics...as a result i feel that my intellectual capacity has lagged behind other well rounded researchers and its a bit of a disappointment for me. on the other hand i dont know of too many incredible geinuses in the biological sciences-just really hard workers.

but really my goal is to do both so I can always fall back on clinical medicine in case the research doesnt pan out...also as an MD i feel like il get more respect as a researcher(especially early on compared to PhD only candidates who may not have attended say harvard for UG)

it says you're a fellow...where are you a fellow?

I'm not sure this is the best forum for you at this time. I'll just leave it at that.
