What are IMG-friendly anesthesia programs?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My advice is to apply to all of them to be sure. That's what I did.

i'm an foreign student , trying to decide where to take an elective rotation, please suggest what programs are IMG friendly?...so that i won't waste the money and time....i'll appreciate any advice...

my program, CCF, is friendly to IMGs -- however, most admitted are either attendings in their home country and/or come and do a year or so in the research department.

Umiami has gone on the record as being IMG friendly...

D712

Baystate, UAMS, UF, BWH (given that you wrote some papers) and CCF to name a few. I think Henry Ford and Jackson Miami also accept some FMGs each year.

Penn State, Temple, Wisconsin College of Medicine

Baystate and CCF prematch FMGs all the time... to the point of cutting their avail slots in half.

CCF requires prior experience, not sure about Baystate.

No offense, but that's more than 15 suggestions, how many more do you need?

The thing is that being IMG-friendly the majority does not allow electives for non-us students, also, due to health issues i can't choose programs from the south

This list doesn't seem very likely, as it covers a good 1/3 of all anesthesiology programs. Anesthesia is moderately competitive for US grads, so it seems unlikely all these places would consider IMGs.

On your list, I see some programs that probably do not interview IMGs often, if at all: UCSF, Northwestern, BID, Brigham, Penn, U Wash.

Some that do: St Lukes Roosevelt, Jackson Memorial, Bostun University.

I disagree, I know UCSF and UWash do and I interviewed at Brigham personally. I think when it comes to being an IMG it varies all over if you are a true foreign grad or a US citizen caribbean grad (different programs have different preferences between the two, no idea why) and research as well as local ties to the area can come into play as well as connections or people making calls for you. Basically if your an IMG with a great app I would apply everywhere esp if you have money to burn. If your application isnt outstanding, there are def match lists online on the Ross/SGU/other carib school websites that show places that tend to take foreign grads. Rule of thumb also is that the farther away you are from a big metro area the friendlier the programs get as more American grads tend to go to big cities. I personally think I had a pretty good application but ran into substantial roadblocks on the way to getting into anesthesia (such as doing a prelim year in general surgery) but if your determined and really want the field....you can do it.

I second that. BWH is very IMG friendly, just look at the match results. BUT: IMGs that match at BWH have usually done extensive research with several peer-reviewed publications, usually in basic science.

They do research at the brigham for sometimes multiple years and put out great publications. This isn't really img friendly as much as research friendly. Some kid from Ross is not matching there. To the op, the img friendly programs are at less desirable programs in less desirable cities. People's anecdotal stories of img's at bigtime programs are worthless considering any program would want someone with great research
