I am a Georgia native that just graduated from college in early May. My family moved to Florida during my senior year so I moved in with them during my gap year. I will be applying as an in state to FL since I have not had a valid GA address in almost a year. I am currently applying to FL, UGA, Auburn, Tennessee and considering maybe 2 more max that I am still deciding on. I would like to pursue mixed animal medicine. I am having a lot of mixed feelings and anxiety regarding my stats and my realistic chances of getting in.

Cumulative GPA: 3.92
science GPA: 3.88
last 45: 3.82

Any degrees achieved

B.S in Biology from Brenau University, Gainesville, GA.
Concentration: Organismal Biology

GRE results: 150 Quant, 154 Qual, writing 3.5

Veterinary Experience:

- Small Animal: 216 hours volunteer/shadowing
- Employment: should be close to ~600 by the time I submit my application
- Large Animal: 62 hours
Animal Experience:
- I am not really sure how to calculate this as I have been a pet owner my entire life. I have not had many other experiences outside of this.
Research Experience:
- I participated in a collaborative research project with my university and the Georgia Aquarium by processing the prey samples of aquatic predators such as belugas, rays and sharks. The samples were collected, processed and sent off to be studied for isotope and fatty acid analyses. Within this research, I wrote a 15-20 page literature review on the topic.
- Regeneration of Planaria Research Project: I spent a semester studying the regenerative properties of Planaria. During this process, I would bisect the worms, separate tail and head and then track how long it took each respective piece to regenerate. After my research was finished, I produced a lab report and poster where I presented at Brenau University's Annual Research Symposium where the university's undergrad, grad and doctorate programs present research conducted throughout the year.

Awards/scholarships:
-
Dean's/Merit list
-Summa Cum Laude graduate
- Played college soccer on an athletic scholarship for my 4 years of undergrad
- MVP for 2019 soccer season
- 2 scholarships from math and science department of the university
- received 2nd highest academic scholarship offered by the provost office of the university

Extracurriculars:
- President of sorority
- Orientation leader
- Captain of college soccer team
-international ambassador

LORS
- vet that is an alumni of my university that I shadowed with for a considerable amount of time
- professor of microbiology that is chair of the science department of my university
- marine biologist/professor/my advisor
- hoping to get one more from a vet at my new job

Employment:
-
Organic Chemistry TA (1+ year)
- Lab Assistant (2+ year)
- Planet Fitness (2 year)
- Nike ( ~3 months , last semester of senior year)

Personal Statement
- wrote about my trip to Colombia (my father is Colombian) and visiting my grandfathers farm + seeing the stray animal populations and how this has inspired me to pursue veterinary medicine to give back to communities that do not have equal access to veterinary care + connecting with my heritage

My main concern is my vet experience. I feel that I am a little late the game with my hours and my lack of them is concerning. With playing a college sport, I did not have a lot of time during the school year to volunteer as my soccer schedule was from Monday-Saturday. I also went to a school that STEM wise was heavily nursing, with little to no animal science courses available. I was the one person in my entire graduating class that I wanted to pursue veterinary medicine. I spent a lot of time advocating for animal science coursework, which is why I was able to take classes such as Animal Behavior, Zoology and Wildlife Management.

I knew deep down in my heart since I was younger that I wanted to be a veterinarian but did not actually consider this a real, viable possibility until my sophomore year of college. In order to make up for this lost time, I decided to take a gap year and apply for the Fall 2023 cycle. I graduated May 6th and began working at my local VCA by the 19th of the same month. I am working full time in order to acquire as many hours as possible. I love my current job as a vet assistant and really loved all of my prior experience just shadowing. The summer going into my senior year, I shadowed at a small animal clinic, a large animal clinic and worked part time for the entire summer in order to get my hours up. I would really appreciate an honest critique of my resume and what my actual chances are of getting in. I am passionate about helping animals and people. I appreciate the time and any words of advice!

Hey! I'm in the same exact boat as you regarding playing on a college soccer team and having very little time to get veterinary experience during undergrad. College soccer is literally like having a full time job 365 days a year! And the weekly schedule varies almost every week so its hard to plan around everything. I've heard that admissions is pretty understanding about this as its unrealistic to expect a college athlete to round up 3,000+ during college (unless they have a family member or are really close with a vet that would be willing to work with their schedule). I personally think your stats looks very well rounded and solid.

I may be wrong but I thought you had to live in a state two years to apply for in state residency?

My father will be living as a Florida resident for more than a year by the time the application is ready for submission. I’m still a dependent and from what I understand, UF looks at that for tuition purposes
