Hi! I'm at a crossroads in my decision making, and wanted to see if I could get some advice here to steer what I choose to do after graduation.

I would really like to go to DO school; here are my stats/ECs:
cGPA: 3.36 (still have one quarter left)
sGPA: 3.0 (it's low, I know)
MCAT 27T; planning on re-taking in the summer
I am majoring in human biology and have a minor in the humanities.
I have over 300+ hours of volunteering in the hospital.
I have been in research for 2 years, no publications.
President of one club, on the executive board for another.
Internship teaching underprivileged middle school kids.
Shadowing experience

I will be taking one year off, and will be retaking the MCAT in that time. I was thinking of getting licensed as a physical therapy assistant and working for a year. But I wasn't sure if I should try a post-bac program instead? I wanted to hear what you all might have to say...I know my stats are pretty wacky.

Thank you!

Shadow 2 DO's.

One in Family Med
One in something like OB/GYN/Sports Med/ Pediatrics

Make sure they use OMT. When you call their receptionist ask if they use OMT.

Shadow those DO's, learn some simple OMT philosophy/treatment and then you should be good to go with your stats.

DO schools really try to weed out the peopel who are interested in DO as opposed to people who just are applying as a backup for MD. So if you can show you actually know about OMM/OMT etc, you will have a significant advantage over 90% of applicants.

DO schools dont look at pure #s as much as MD do.

That being said. There are Masters programs you can do that would pretty much guarantee you 100% to get in as long as you didnt get C's in them.

AZCOM has a 1 and 2 year Masters, you literally take the same classes the MEd School students do, with the same teachers who use the same exact notes.

I think you have a relatively decent shot at this years cycle. You're sgpa is kinda on the low side but I think you should take a shot this cycle. What do you have to lose? except maybe some $$$ for apps/interviews. I dont really think you need to take the MCAT again if you strictly want to go to DO school. 27 is just a shade below the average, but it is perfectly acceptable for many of the schools out there.

The OMT/OMM advice is awesome!

Thank you both for the advice; I really needed it!

27 is not below the average. It is the average, pretty much.
