Hi! I am a sophomore pre-med student at a small liberal arts school on the east coast and I am majoring in biology. I am beginning to learn about the process of applying to medical schools, but the more I learn, the more I feel like I might not have a good chance of getting in anywhere. I'd really appreciate anyone who is willing to weigh in on whether I should even apply (as a junior) or if I'd be better off taking a gap year or rethinking medicine altogether.
Here are my stats/info:
Here are my stats/info:
- Fairly prestigious liberals arts school (top 10 U.S. News)
- Overall GPA= 3.65, Science GPA= approx. 3.45. GPA should increase a tiny bit next year.
- Have not taken MCAT but I am preparing early so hopefully will do okay. Got a 2300 on SAT. I'm not sure if that in anyway correlates to how I might do on the MCAT, but thought I'd include it.
- Have danced for many years and am very actively involved in dance at my college- pretty big time commitment... between 4-8 hours per week.
- Am on an environmentally related committee at my college and have been involved with planning several events with the committee. Around 2 hours per week.
- Have a summer internship research position (12 weeks per summer) at a prestigious institution since freshman year and will continue this position. I have completed my own project and will complete at least a couple more projects. Basically, I'm doing more than washing beakers 🙂.
- Am in another environmentally related group on campus which will be putting at least one event next year
- I will be shadowing a physician several days this summer and most likely several times next school year
- Next school year I will be doing something volunteer related. Haven't decided what yet though.
