Hello! New to the forum here. I was hoping to get your thoughts on what my chances are of getting a residency.
I am a non US IMG medical student. I am a Canadian citizen. My scores aren't that great. I am a very hard worker and i'm proud of my scores though i know they're not competitive at all. I tried my best and I have been consistent in what I know. I have some personal issues but don't want to use them as an excuse and would like a very objective opinion on my chances. I also have a transfer on my transcript. The school i went to is a Caribbean med school.

STEP 1: 209
STEP 2 CK: 213
STEP 2 CS: taking it soon.

Is there anything I can do to improve my chances? what specialties do you think might be good for me to apply to?

appreciate your thoughts! looking forward to reading your responses

Thank you! <3

FM/IM/Peds in rural locations (not SDN rural, actual small towns in the south and Midwest with less than 60k people). Don’t know what that graph says for you guys off the top of my head but I assume you have about a 50/50 shot in those places. Best thing to do is to go do a rotation at a US school to get them to take you, but if you suck it won’t help you. Good luck!

Not great chances according to the interacting NRMP charting outcome:

36% at FM, 28% at IM, 31% at peds, 33% at Neuro, 22% at Anesthesiology, 36% at EM, 33% at Psych, 39% at Path.
I would choose 2 of the ones in the upper 30s and run with it. You would probably have better luck with Path and FM. Also apply very very widely to more than 150 programs.

How is EM that high? Everyone is telling me how competitive EM is, yet it’s the same probability as FM?

One of my mentors recommended the book "Iserson's Getting Into A Residency. " He told me that the book has helped students sort these things out; especially to help out sorting things out with choosing a residency and making you look good on the application and preparing you for interviews. I know they just came out with a new edition and I have heard that book is a must for medical students. Other fourth years have also recommended the book. I hope this helps! Good Luck!

EM (avg step 1 229) is not that competitive really. More competitive than FM (avg step 1 217) for sure, but I would say about the same competitiveness as IM (avg Step 1 226) in terms of average stats. All you need is a good SLOE and 220+ on Step 1, and you will do find for EM coming from a US school. What probably would make IM and FM less competitive than EM is probably the number of spots offered. IM and FM positions (8116 and 4017) far outnumber EM spots (2488) and therefore even with low step scores someone will probably find an IM/FM program somewhere to get into, which is not the case for EM.

as a canadian IMG like yourself from a carib school that actually matched; odds are not in your favor; doable but it will be tough. Why havent you taken CS yet? You will have a better chance next cycle with step cs finished and step 3 under your belt

I think the SLOE is a limiting factor for a number of IMGs. If you're able to make inroads with an EM program you'll do fine, but this can be difficult coming from an international school. Thus people who are unable to get a SLOE probably don't bother applying, and those who do manage to get a SLOE probably have a better chance than you would think just based on their Step 1 score.

I'm with the others, this will be a tough road. It seems like you'll likely have at least one gap year between when you graduate and when you apply--surely you're not planning to apply this cycle if you haven't even decided on a specialty? Having a gap between graduation and applying is not a dealbreaker, but it certainly doesn't help.

EM is incredibly unfriendly to IMGs. You would not match.

Caribbean student
NonUS citizen
1st percentile Step 2 score
School transfer
Possible gap year?

I honestly don't think you'll match to anything but try for very rural FM as above.
