Hi,

I have just started taking post bac classes at a CUNY school. My goal is to get into dental school, however, Im worried that I dont even have a chance. Could someone please give me advice on how I should proceed given the information below

Undergrad: (top public school)
Major: Liberal Arts graduated '04
GPA: cum 2.69
D1 athlete

I took no science classes in undergrad besides an intro nutri sci class which i got a B+ in.

I took alot of honors science classes in high school and took ap bio, did really well in all of them. Love science.

Currently I work full time at a major corporation and go to school in the evenings, taking one class for now (bio) plan on taking two next semester.

Also, I plan on volunteering at a local dental clinic during the summer, as i dont have much time with work and school right now to do that.

I am getting an A in my bio class right now and study all the time, all wkend, after work etc.

I plan on eventually leaving work full and going to an accredited post bac program after next semester. That is if i can get in.

Since I have no science classes from undergrad and its been 5 years since i graduated, how badly will my poor gpa affect my chances? In addition, should I do a post bac, or get a masters degree in science?

Please let me know and thank you in advance for your help.

🙂

If I were you I would, get a master degree since your GPA is so low. I would take all the prereqs: Gen Chem I and II, Organic Chem I and II, Bio I and II, Calculus I.. volunteer, shadow, take DAT and you're in.

You can do it! 👍

Yea bro, your gpa is crap low. You have to get a masters and ace all the pre reqs to even stand a chance. I doubt you can get in even with like 25+ DATs. Good Luck

So are you saying I have to take the pre-reqs like I am now and then once those are complete, go get a masters in biology or chemistry, or will I complete the prereqs while getting the masters degree.

Note that I did not take any of the prereqs in undergrad aside from english, calc, and stats. In addition more than 3 years has passed since undergrad and I have read that after more than 3 years that your bad grades are not scrutinized as much if you show considerable improvements during your post bac.

Please advice me on the above.

Thank you ...

I think as a liberal arts major, they will make you take the pre-req courses anyway to get a masters science degree. So I think you should apply for a masters program right away and see what they make you take and go from there. Just ace your masters program with a 3.7+ and make sure on you p.s you state clearly how you have changed and matured over the years out of undergrad.

any recommendations for masters degree programs (ie east coast / nyc). hahaha I dont even know how I would get in with my current GPA. Thats why im taking undergrad science classes right now.

Oh I forgot to ask, I didnt quite understand your first explination about the graduate programs.

From what you are saying, do you mean that I need to complete the prereqs to get into the graduate program. Or the dental pre req classes will be included in the graduate program, i.e. o chem, chem, physics, and bio.

Thank you for your help

You have to complete the undergrad prereqs to get into a related master's program. get outside advice though. Go talk to an adviser and get a second opinion.
