I know this is a common post, but here it goes, these are my facts:

Mcat: 40
gpa: 2.34
Bachelors of art in psychology as well as certified EMT-B.

My gpa is abysmal because I failed 2 semesters. I lived 4 hours away from my family and my mother had become handicapped physically. My brother was 6 at the time and my dad is also physically handicapped, I had to travel often to help them with their day to day activities and it put a strain on my studies, when I dropped classes it was too late and I received failing grades. I studied hard for a year for my MCAT's and I've done over 100 hrs of internships and shadowing. My gpa does not reflect my capabilities as a potential medical student. And I am determined to be a doctor.

Do I have a chance at a US medical school? If not, what would I have to do at this point to fix it so I can go? I am willing to do whatever it takes. I really truly appreciate any advice and all the help you guys can give! (here's to hoping I get some positive feedback as well!)

Great MCAT! I would suggest retaking courses from those two semesters over the next year while your MCAT score is still valid. With a GPA like that, schools are probably going to automatically screen you out, so wait a year or two until you can bring it up to atleast a 3.3 minimum if possible. Also, somewhere on your application you are going to need to explain the reason for those two semesters.

Medical school is still within reach, good luck!

Thank you Pookie9000! Is it still possible to re-take those classes since I've already gotten my degree? I took some post-grad classes and I did well in them, I'm not sure how they would factor into my undergrad gpa though :/

Grade replacement and osteopathic medical school. It'll be a quicker and more focused plan than strict grade repair (simply taking additional classes with no grade replacement which i think would basically be the only hope for the allopathic route).

The AMCAS application lists your total GPA for each of the three categories (overall, science, non-science) and breaks it down by year. As I've understood, post bachelor work counts in your undergraduate GPA. Graduate work does not. It does not matter if you have already graduated with a BA/BS.

As stated in the previous post, grade replacement works with DO schools. MD schools include all grades.

retake at community college and apply DO
