Note: I'm posting for a friend, who for some reason doesn't want to post himself. He and I (I know him pretty well) will answer questions/appreciate any input. He's mainly asking for chances of MD or even DO, at what ratio should he apply MD/DO (e.g. 50/50 or 60/40), and a general list of schools to consider. He's mainly looking to stay in the Northeast (greater NY area). Thank you.

"Started off at a low graduation rate high school. Did not consider education valuable at all. Never studied barely went to class. Brought the same attitude into community college. 1st semester gpa was 0.8. Put on Academic probation. Next semester was academically dismissed based on my grades but appealed to overturn. Graduated from community college decided I wanted to be a doctor and decided to take school seriously graduated with a chemistry degree."

I would go 50/50 with MD/DO given the low GPA and decent MCAT. Any networking with local med schools for insight on how going to a resource-challenged education system before undergraduate will be received?

Thanks for the feedback... My friend has no knowledge of how schools will receive his earlier education. Is there a way to find out? What do you mean by "networking?" Are we as students allowed to reach out to medical schools and simply ask via email "how would you guys react to grades like this in a situation like mine?" prior to applying for the cycle?
