3.66 GPA, 3.75 sGPA (*please see below paragraph)
BS in Biology from major University
*also getting Chem and Psych minor
33 MCAT (12/9/12)

GPA side note: My GPA from my freshman year was a 2.6 at a community college, and I was not planning on medical school (I didn't take any "pre-med" course work during this period). I ended up going through some pretty crazy life-changing events, and this is what led me to my love for medicine. Since then, I have maintained a 3.99 GPA at a major University (over 100 credit hours)... Please tell me if you think this will increase my chances.

Clinical Volunteer Activities:
- Volunteer in ED of childrens hospital (2 years @ 3 hrs/week)
- Volunteer at an orthopedic hospital (3 years @ 3 hrs/week)

Nonclinical volunteer activities:
- Boy scout leader (assistant) - One summer (over 100 hours due to backpacking trips)
- Volunteer with the American Cancer Association

Physician shadowing (include specialties and total hours)
- 24 hrs w/ family practitioner
- 8 hours w/ radiologist
- 16 hours w/ ENT
- 20 hours w/ ED physician

Research:
- Microbiology lab: I have worked in this lab for ~6 months... I am generally in the lab 12-15 hrs/week, and I am currently working to get published.
- Clinical Research Assistant: Worked as an assistant for ~1 year (6 hrs/week) enrolling patients in studies at two different hospitals.

Leadership:
- Anatomy TA: Worked in an anatomy lab at a large university for 2 years (was a paid position). Taught students 9 hrs/week, and was responsible for writing and grading weekly quizzes (as well as practical exams).
- Ochem I & II TA: Helped students during weekly discussion sections with problem sets. Also helped with grading exams.
- Kids health website: Created a website promoting/educating kids in my local area to be physically fit, as well as how to eat a healthy diet. Deliver brochures to local schools on a monthly basis.

You have a reasonable shot at lower tier MD and could get into any DO school in the country. Get the MSAR and look for schools with a 31 or 32 average, since your GPA is questionable.

Okay, thanks! I would like to go MD if I can, but DO is something that I will definitely be considering.

Definitely apply to your state school. I would then look at private schools that are open to OOS where your MCAT and GPAs are 10th-90th percentile (using the MSAR).

Alrighty... Sounds good. Thanks for your input. Any others are also welcomed and appreciated! 😀

Anybody know if the upward trend in my GPA will be taken into consideration by medical school admissions committees? I have a pretty compelling story that will explain my low freshman GPA in my personal statement, but I don't want to go into too much detail. In addition, my GPA for the classes that are considered "pre-requisites" is a 4.0.

Also, are there schools that tend to look at this more-so than others? If so please let me know what ones so I can add them to my list.

Thanks again to everyone offering advice!

yes the upward trend is pretty important. Just make sure your story about your low GPA start isn't just a long excuse. There are lots of applicants who go through hard things and don't get bad grades at any point

Solid application.
I think you should think about more regional schools too... UArizona x2, USC, etc.
Apply for overall fit.

Alright, awesome! Thanks again to everyone offering their input. I will definitely apply to schools in the western region, but probably not quite as extensively as to schools in the midwest/east coast. It just seems that western state schools aren't quite as friendly to OOS applicants.
