Hey I'm an African American Male
3.48 GPA 27O MCAT
on a D1 athletic team
100+ hospital volunteering hours
2 yrs diabetes research
some community service

I in no way believe my URM status will carry me to the promise land, but was wondering if I look like a decent candidate.

You probably have a shot at certain MD schools, but you've left out both your science gpa and state of residence. Unfortunately, it makes a difference whether you're from CA or FL, as it effects where you can apply and expect a likelihood of an acceptance. Also, have you considered DO?

With strong LORs you could land some interviews at some pretty good institutions. If you bring enough charm to the interviews...well, hey you could wind up in the school of your dreams,

sGPA 3.4
State Wisconsin, though I'm not attending any state schools there.

I'm hoping to get some Interviews because I'm great at charming people and getting them to like me. As for DO schools I've thought about it, but i think at this time i would rather take a year off and improve my app.

IMO my letters are from very good sources so this gives me some reassurance. Thanks for your thoughts!

If you don't mind my asking, why would you want to waste a year of your life to improve your credentials if you might have a good shot at getting into a DO school and becoming a doctor?

We'll i've never looked into the application process for DO before. But a friend told me that they typically don't appriciate applying to both MD and DO at the same time. Other than that i'm just getting worn out. Especially considering i'd still possibly have to do secondaries for the schools i've applied to.

So I'd rather take a year and get everything in order and be first in line to submit my app next year(for MD/and or DO).

Whoever told you that is either misinformed or a liar. Do schools know most applicants are applying to both, they just want yo to be able answer the question "why are you applying to DO schools?". It's still fairly early in the application process as most DO schools still accept applications up to February, so you have time (you can have the primary completed by next week). If you feel worn out by the process at this stage imagine going through it a second time in a year when you're not guaranteed to have improved your credentials (the hope is that you will).

Again, you're tossing out a year of your life on the hopes that you will improve your application. You're not guaranteed to do better by taking this year off (you have a chance of making your app worse also) If things don't go as planned it could end up being several more years that you throw away.

As your numbers sit now, you are on the low end of competitive for my school and many other DO schools, but the key word is COMPETITIVE. you have a shot at getting into medical school this cycle that I suggest you take.

Just based on your numbers, you have an 85% chance of acceptance. Your athletic involvement and research are awesome, so I would say your chances are even higher than that. Squeeze in some shadowing and you should be set.

Thanks Gnomo, I'm trying to get some shadowing. Gotta find a way to get my foot in the door with a doctor and hit him/her up a couple times.
