Hi everyone,

I’m new to this forum and would appreciate any guidance on what you think my chances are of getting into an MD or DO program, and what I should focus on in the next few months.

Key Concerns & Questions

  1. Scribing/LOR Issue: I left the first scribing company (where I worked mainly with one doctor) without saying anything, approximately 3 years ago, after my parents made me quit due to me failing organic chemistry (the Orgo D). Is it too risky to reach out to that doctor for a Letter of Recommendation (LOR) now?
  2. GPA Discrepancy: My school's official GPA (3.64) is significantly higher than the AMCAS/AACOMAS estimated GPA (3.45/3.46) due to the forgiveness policy on my repeated Organic Chemistry I grade. How bad is the sub-3.5 sGPA/cGPA going to be for MD/DO schools?

Overall Concern

I'm very worried about my current standings. Please give me any advice on what I should focus on for the next few months. I plan to apply in the upcoming cycle. Hopefully this MCAT comes back good, so I can move onto focusing other things. I'm not picky, I just want to get accepted into any US based medical school (I want to avoid the Carribeans due to personal family members having a rough time there). Thank you for reading this and any advice you guys offer me.

Welcome to the forums.

What feedback have you received from your prehealth advisors? Have you networked with current medical students? What are your plans regarding financing your education?

Where are your service orientation activities? Specific examples include food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation.

Honestly, I didn't meet too much with my pre-health advisor during my time in college. The last meeting I had was in 2023, and they emphasized that I should get shadowing hours within the United States. I have not networked with current medical students. Regarding financing my education, I plan to take out a loan, but also help from my family.

I don't have any service orientation activities. I tried securing a volunteering position at several homeless shelters, but they were fully staffed at the time I looked. I haven't looked into them ever since, which I probably should.

You should accumulate 150+ hours of non clinical volunteering such as food bank, homeless shelter since some schools screen out applicants with less than 150 hours. Also 50 hours of shadowing in the USA. Post your MCAT score here when available.

Thank you, i'll focus those 2 things. Also will post the mcat score 🙂

Really fighting the urge to say OP's application will be dead on arrival with that cemetery volunteering.
