I work as an athletic trainer serving one of the high schools in my city, taking care of their sports injuries, rehabbing them, referring them out as necessary for further evaluation, etc. With my kids, I've preached to them to be sure to keep me in the loop when it comes to dealing with diabetes, asthma, seizures(I've could tell you a great story about that one), sickle-cell, heart problems, and so on. I tell them to be sure if they see another physician regarding any of their conditions, I need documentation of what they were being seen for to a)have an understanding straight from the physician what their diagnosis is and b)if the physician is clearing he/she to play.

Outside of the above, or if you have anything to add, what are some issues that I might should be aware of when working with the pediatric population based on what you've seen in your clinical experiences?

Thank you very much for your time. 🙂

It sounds like you are doing a great job taking care of these kids. As far as sports participation goes, I can't think of anything to add.

If you really want to help pediatricians out, talk to them about the risky behaviors they have. You have a special opportunity because you're around the students and they trust you as a source of medical info. I know that's a stretch from athletic training, but telling a kid to use a condom or not drink and drive can come from anyone.
