and does blood flow through them to the ventricles or the reverse during a standard blood cycle?
I know the left ventricle pumps blood through the body and right ventricle pumps blood to the pulmonary arteries, but what do the right and left atrium do?
i know that the right atrium and right ventricle connect via tricuspid valve and the left ones connect and exchange blood via bicuspid valve.

From my understanding, they're essentially pumps. The left atrium is stronger than the right atrium.

The atria allow for the uninterrupted venous return of blood to the heart during ventricular contractions when the tricuspid and mitral valves are closed. They can also help to fill the ventricles by contracting at higher heart rates.

Just in addition,

Most (2/3-3/4) of the ventricular filling is done passively, i.e. blood flowing down into the ventricle without the actual atrial contraction. The atrial kick or atrial contraction serves to push the last 1/3 of blood through into the ventricles.
